Celtic on this Day – European victories and fine solo efforts

On this day, we reflect on notable Celtic games, including European triumphs and outstanding individual performances…

On September 25, 1948, Celtic defeated Rangers 3-1 in the Scottish League Cup. Charlie Tully dominated the game for Celtic, with the Sunday Post writing, “Tully dribbled almost at will, the miraculous Irishman bewildered, badgered, and mesmerised Rangers.” Three Ibrox players were alongside him, and none dared to tackle. He teased McColl and everyone else who came into his orbit. He gave calm to Celtic, mania to Rangers, and goals to both.”Leading up to the game, the press claimed that Leeds United were attempting to bring Charlie Tully and Bobby Evans to Elland Road. It didn’t deter Tully or Celtic, who rallied from behind to win handily.

On September 26, 1965, Celtic defeated Aberdeen 7-1. Ronnie Simpson made only one appearance for Celtic that season because John Fallon was injured. Celtic were monitored by Go Ahead Eagles manager Co Van Es, who was preparing for his team’s visit to Celtic Park in two weeks for the European Cup Winners Cup. Lennox and Jinky both scored twice, and Hughes, Auld, and McBride added to the total.

Celtic won the Champions League 1-0 against Portuguese team Porto 23 years ago today. Martin O’Neill received a touchline ban from UEFA and had to sit in the stands for the match. Who else than Henrik Larsson can secure Celtic’s three points in the group stage? Larsson scored his 15th goal in European action for the Hoops.

Celtic defeated Copenhagen 1-0 on September 26, 2006. Prior to the Champions League group stage encounter, Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink was ruled out with an ankle injury. That meant Kenny Milller stepped up and smashed a penalty past his former Rangers teammate Jesper Christiansen in the Copenhagen goal. The Hoops held on following a tense night.

Celtic defeated St Mirren 2-0 in Paisley exactly 15 years ago today. The game will be remembered for Paddy McCourt’s finest single goal of his career, which he scored after collecting the ball from the halfway line and navigating past six St Mirren players before smashing it past Paul Gallagher. Maloney, overshadowed by McCourt’s mazy, hit a curler into the upper right corner.
