Alan Shearer, a legend of Newcastle United, has been asked an intriguing question.
The 54-year-old had an incredible career at Newcastle United, leading his childhood team following his record-breaking £15 million transfer. With 206 goals in all, Shearer broke the record for most goals scored by Newcastle, a record he will hold for a very long time.
Shearer did not, however, have many career victories. Although he did lift the Premier League title while playing for Blackburn Rovers, that was not the case. Despite playing for Newcastle United during a period when Manchester United dominated English football, he did not win any trophies with the Magpies.
Shearer could have played for that Manchester United team, too. Sir Alex Ferguson made two attempts to sign Shearer, but the striker rejected the Red Devils’ offers.

Shearer and Man United have always harbored a small rivalry since that time. When Newcastle and Manchester United play, their fans sing songs about Shearer, and the Toon Army responds.
However, what would happen if Shearer had to choose between his two greatest competitors? That’s the query Gary Lineker has put out.
Shearer was asked by Lineker on the most recent episode of The Rest Is Football podcast which club, out of Sunderland and Manchester United, he would sign if he had to.
Shearer will seize any chance to make light of Sunderland.
Shearer was never going to choose between Sunderland and Manchester United. Newcastle’s fiercest rivals are Sunderland, and he has a long history with Man United!
Shearer made fun of David Moyes’ tenure as Sunderland manager on the Rest Is Football podcast not too long ago.
Shearer has said that he would prefer to see Sunderland return to the Premier League, though. He expressed his desire for the Black Cats to be elevated earlier this year in order to increase the frequency of Tyne-Wear derbies.
The two teams’ FA Cup match in January marked their first encounter since 2016.
The date of the upcoming derby is unknown. After a strong start to the 2024–25 season, Sunderland will be aiming for following season. After the first six games of the Championship, they are ranked second.
