Why Luton is make or break for Sheffield Wednesday outcast who Barry Bannan thinks is a 'top player'

One Sheffield Wednesday castaway will look to solidify his spot in Danny Rohl’s team against Luton Town.

Sheffield Wednesday travels to Luton Town with the goal of breaking their four-game league winless skid.

Danny Rohl’s team has a difficult task at Kenilworth Road to earn more than a point. However, the Hatters have been struggling and are only slightly ahead of the Owls in the standings based on goal difference.

Sheffield Wednesday fans’ hope has certainly dropped since the transfer market closed, and numerous additions have simply failed to meet expectations.

Rohl has tinkered with his selection, and one man who was surplus to needs at the start of the season appears to have found his way back into the team, but he now faces a make-or-break encounter against Luton Town.

In Sheffield Wednesday’s 1-1 home draw against Queens Park Rangers, wing-back Marvin Johnson was brought in to replace Max Lowe, who had a slow start.

Despite a sad afternoon for the Owls, Johnson did admirably on his return to the team. He outperformed the former Blades defender on the attacking front and worked effectively on the left.

According to The Star, Sheffield Wednesday captain Barry Bannan has referred to him as a ‘great player’, indicating that he has the support of the team to maintain his position.

Max Lowe has an unclear future if Marvin Johnson performs well.

While Johnson has done well to imply that he should be the first choice at left wing-back following his performance against QPR, that opportunity has arisen as a result of Lowe’s efforts at the start of the 2024-25 season.

If Johnson can follow up his QPR performance with another strong performance against Luton Town, Lowe may have a difficult time regaining his spot.

It is fair to say that he has become something of a scapegoat, maybe due to his experience with Sheffield United, but Rohl made the correct decision to bring in Johnson.

Lowe must impress Rohl in order to be confirmed as Sheffield Wednesday’s backup wing-back if Johnson continues to excel.
