James Maddison hopes that his goal against Brentford will ‘shut up’ some of his critics because he has been happy with his own performances this season.
Maddison is proving his doubters wrong
There were some concerns and doubts about Maddison coming into the new season as the attacking midfielder had gone completely off the boil in the latter part of last campaign after returning from his injury lay-off.
With the 27-year-old also having been hit with the disappointment of missing out on the England squad for the Euros, many wondered how he would cope at the start of the season.
The former Leicester City man has certainly given a comprehensive answer, looking back to his lively and creative best at the start of the new campaign.
Maddison delivered what was arguably one of his best displays in a Spurs shirt against the Bees, crowing off an impressing performance with a well-taken goal.
‘Shuts up a few people’ – James Maddison
The midfielder pointed out that many do not give attacking players their dues unless they find the back of the net.
The Tottenham man said after the 3-1 win over Brentford (via The Metro): “The team is always the most important. I would have been happy with my performance and how I played regardless of whether I got the goal. It obviously helped us in the game because we got that little cushion.
“It kind of shuts up a few people in the background who think the goals and assists do matter more than what they probably do. I am an attacking player who has always scored goals and always got assists, that’s my job.
“So when you are not doing that and even if you feel like you are playing well personally, helping the team, the gaffer is happy with what I’m doing, for some games you have it where I feel like I play really well in the build-up and help the team progress but you don’t get a goal or assist to show for that.
“And then people start questioning the numbers, so sometimes you have to take the outside noise with a pinch of salt, but on the other hand I love scoring goals and it was a nice feeling.
“I think I had to blow the dust off the old darts celebration because it has been a little while, but it felt so good in front of the South Stand to score.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Maddison has arguably been our best player so far this season and we are undoubtedly a much stronger team when the 27-year-old is at his best, with the attacking midfielder capable of opening up defences with his vision, guile and his passing.
