Plymouth Argyle player ratings following their defeat to table-topping West Brom.

Josh Maja scored in the 62nd minute to give the Pilgrims a 1-0 Championship defeat at The Hawthorns.

In the 62nd minute, Josh Maja scored the game’s sole goal, which Dan Grimshaw was unable to save. As West Brom attempted to increase their advantage, he made a good save on a Semi Ajayi header from a corner. Karlan Grant, Alex Mowatt, and John Swift all had shots on goal in the first half, but each one hit the post. As Argyle sought to build from the back, he passed the ball with accuracy and velocity.

Joe Edwards, captain of the Green Army, received a warm welcome from the 2,100-strong crowd after signing a contract extension until summer 2026. At right-back, he played with the same determination and intensity as always. One late header was saved by his old Argyle teammate Alex Palmer. One of two Pilgrims players booked, this time for a late sliding tackle on Tom Fellows in the second half.
Kornel Szucs 7 –Will be upset that Josh Maja ran in behind him to touch in Uros Racic’s low cross for the winning goal, but otherwise this was another fine performance from the 22-year-old, who has acclimated to the Championship extremely well and swiftly. Booked for a foul on Maja as Argyle faced pressure after going down in the game. During the second half, he also shown his ability to chuck a deep pass, which may be beneficial later in the season.

Lewis Gibson 7 –One of the former Everton defender’s most striking qualities is his consistency in performance. He seldom has a terrible game. As usual, he made blocks and won headers against West Brom, and there are already signs of a nice relationship building between him and Szucs.

Bali Mumba 7 has established himself as the team’s left-back following impressive performances early in the season, while summer acquisition Nathanael Ogbeta is still awaiting his opportunity. Mumba faced a quality offensive player in West Brom’s Tom Fellows and handled him effectively.

Adam Randell 8-STAR MAN -For this encounter, he played in a deeper center midfield area and frequently led Argyle’s attacks from there, receiving passes from Dan Grimshaw. Randell never appeared frazzled, moving the ball quickly and precisely as the Pilgrims attempted to maneuver through the West Brom onslaught.

Darko Gyabi, on loan from Leeds United, demonstrated full fitness against the Championship leaders. Played with a lot of quickness and strength, and had a terrific low shot on the turn that Alex Palmer saved on an Argyle run at the end of the first half.

Wayne Rooney chose Adam Forshaw’s experience over Callum Wright for the match at The Hawthorns, where he played a diverse position. At times, he pushed forward alongside Darko Gyabi from midfield, while at others, he dropped back to assist Adam Randell.

Morgan Whittaker (7) missed a one-on-one opportunity against Alex Palmer due to an error by West Brom captain Kyle Bartley in the first half. Whittaker also blasted high over the bar when Ibrahim Cissoko set him up shortly after. Aside from those two possibilities, Whittaker was always a danger going forward, provided some good switching of play, and stung Palmer’s hands with a ferocious second-half shot as the game remained goalless.

Ibrahim Cissoko received a lot of the ball on the Argyle left and caused issues for West Brom right-back Darnell Furlong, limiting his ability to help his side’s forward activity. He may have cut too much on his right foot, making it easier for West Brom to defend against him, rather than moving outside and crossing with his left.

Ryan Hardie’s pace and movement caused concern for West Brom center-backs Semi Ajayi and Kyle Bartley. He latched onto a through ball from Morgan Whittaker in the first half but was unable to finish. He also came close with a flicked header from an Ibrahim Cissoko cross before the break. He didn’t get a clean view of the goal after that before being substituted toward the end of the match.
