Plymouth Argyle Loan Watch: Zak Baker makes winning return to Tiverton Town.
A look at the six Argyle players out on loan: Baker, Josh Bernard, Saxon Earley, Will Jenkins Davies, Jack Matthews, and Ben Waine.
Zak Baker, a goalkeeper on loan from Plymouth Argyle, contributed to Tiverton Town’s 2-1 home win against Winchester City on Saturday.
The 19-year-old returned to Tiverton last week after spending much of the previous season with the East Devon club, and he started against Winchester right away. At 1-1 in the second half, Baker produced two great one-on-one stops against Tommy Wright to keep his team level.
Tiverton then secured a second consecutive Southern League Premier South victory, after going winless in their first six games, thanks to an added-time goal by Dylan Jones. As a consequence, they climbed out of the relegation zone and into 18th place.
Baker will be on loan at Tiverton until the end of December. He began the season on loan at Plymouth Parkway but was recalled by Argyle following Michael Cooper’s move to Sheffield United.
Baker has returned to Tiverton to compete with Dan Grimshaw for first-team football, having previously played for Coventry City and Shrewsbury Town.
Will Jenkins Davies, an Argyle midfielder, is also back in familiar territory after beginning his third loan stint with National League South club Torquay United last week.
The 19-year-old played for the Gulls twice last season while recovering from an ankle injury and signed a new one-year deal with the Pilgrims this summer. Last month, Argyle fell 2-0 against Watford in the Carabao Cup second round. He came on as a substitute.
Jenkins Davies was picked as a replacement by Torquay manager Paul Wotton for Saturday’s home league game against St Albans City, and he came on in the 61st minute to help Torquay draw 1-1 in front of 3,278 fans at Plainmoor. The Gulls are sixth in the rankings, with 17 points after nine games.
Josh Bernard, an Argyle first-year professional, came in as a late replacement for Tavistock in their 3-0 FA Trophy second qualifying round win over North Leigh at Langsford Park, while Pilgrims defender Jack Matthews was not in the Lambs team.
Ben Waine, an Argyle and New Zealand international striker, came off the bench in the 74th minute of Mansfield Town’s 2-1 League One triumph at home to Shrewsbury Town on Saturday.
Waine has made three league appearances off the bench for the eighth-placed Stags since signing on loan on transfer deadline day. His sole debut came in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy, a 3-0 loss at home to Bradford City.
Meanwhile, Argyle left-back Saxon Earley has made only one substitute appearance for Lincoln City since coming on loan on August 30. That happened in a 1-0 home loss to Chesterfield in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy.
The 21-year-old, who made only two appearances for the Pilgrims last season owing to ankle ailments, did not make the squad for Lincoln’s 0-0 League One tie at home to Wigan Athletic on Saturday.
