Lopetegui Shares How Guido Rodriguez Reacted to Substitution

Lopetegui Shares How Guido Rodriguez Reacted to Substitution.

The boss of West Ham United, Julen Lopetegui, has discussed his thoughts on the Hammers’ 3-0 loss to Chelsea at the London Stadium over the weekend. The Spanish manager has acknowledged that his own tactical choices led to the loss, but he has also revealed that midfielder Guido Rodriguez has not responded poorly to being replaced in the first half of the match.

Although there were initial concerns, Rodriguez’s replacement for Tomas Soucek came just before halftime, with West Ham behind 2-0 to Enzo Maresca’s team, and it wasn’t because of an injury. That raised questions among fans because Lopetegui clearly made a tactical error in their team’s third home loss of the season. Nevertheless, the Spaniard accepted full responsibility and claimed that Rodriguez understood why he made the mistake.

The Spaniard elaborated on Rodriguez’s response to being replaced in the first half before saying that he still stands by his assessment that he was solely to blame for the defeat to the Blues. He declared:

“Always. It is so easy to understand. It’s not because of Rodriguez’s fault when you substitute a player before the half. You act in this way because you feel like you need to change something [shrugs], but I’ve told the players that my intention is to go against my first judgement rather than to oppose any particular player.

“It’s not something I enjoy doing, but we must be honest and accept this as it is. In this instance, it involved Rodriguez, and he is aware that such things do occur occasionally, but he also comprehends.”

“I discussed my errors with Chelsea thereafter, stating that I was always to blame. But now that this has occurred, we are concentrating on the upcoming game. Without a doubt, the coach makes the first error since we make decisions, sometimes for the better and sometimes worse. However, we must act upon making these choices in order to improve the team’s ability to compete. They will undoubtedly compete more skilfully, and the desired outcomes and scores will materialise.”
