Leeds United: Ex-CEO makes Birmingham City reference in Daniel Farke warning

Keith Wyness has warned against Leeds United sacking Daniel Farke at this stage.

According to Football Insider, Wyness used Birmingham City’s termination of John Eustace as an example of what may happen to a team if they fire a manager too soon.

Eustace had done a fine job at Blues, guiding the Midlands club into the play-offs, but the St Andrew’s leadership was not satisfied.

They appointed Wayne Rooney as Eustace’s replacement, and it proved to be a pivotal time in the season for all the wrong reasons, as Birmingham were relegated to League One at the end of last season.

Leeds have made a respectable start to the 2024/25 season and are now in sixth place, which is a nice position to be in at this point.

The Whites may have hoped to be higher in the division, but at this early juncture of the season, their position is irrelevant as long as they are in contention for promotion.

Last weekend’s 2-0 away win at Cardiff City secured the Whites’ position in the play-offs for the time being, but it remains to be seen whether they can keep it.

Keith Wyness warns Daniel Farke of Leeds United.
Despite their promising start, Leeds manager Farke has had a difficult time because his team has squandered points in games when they should have won.

Their Carabao Cup defeat to Middlesbrough was disappointing, and they would have preferred to win the tie against Portsmouth and at least draw the home loss against Burnley.

Despite these dismal setbacks, Wyness feels Leeds should not rush to remove Farke.

He told Football Insider: “Birmingham is a great example of owners who believed they knew everything about football, recruited Wayne Rooney, and ended themselves in League One. That is a serious illustration of what may go wrong when you act too soon. They made some major blunders.

“American owners can do that, but any nationality can do that – there have been terrible British owners as well. It’s a desire for success, but the way to that in football isn’t always so quick. I think Farke is a good manager, and he’s good for Leeds. He’s had to readjust the squad and get going, so any kneejerk reaction would be wrong.”

Keith Wyness is right about Daniel Farke

Farke is a good manager with experience at this level.

Leeds would be unlikely to follow Birmingham’s lead in sacking their manager, considering the Whites have a very good squad capable of securing promotion.

However, the Whites currently have stability under Farke, and fans should continue to believe in him.

Wyness makes the legitimate point that Farke has had to re-adjust his roster due to the amount of movement in and out of the club over the summer.

And, after leading the team to 90 points last season, he deserves another chance at promotion with West Yorkshire.
