With Lee Buchanan, Dion Sanderson, and Ethan Laird advancing in their injury recuperations, Birmingham City’s defensive depth may soon be increased.

Sanderson and Buchanan resumed training last week, and if they survive the week, they might be considered for Peterborough United’s Saturday (3pm) lineup. Given the Blues’ impressive start to the season, the best that any player can expect for right now is a spot on the bench.

Ben Davies’ strong performance against Rotherham United last weekend didn’t help the cause of former Blues skipper Sanderson.Davies replaced the injured Kyle Bielik, who is anticipated to return to the back line when the Eagles play Peterborough.

Being one of just two outfield players in League One to have played every minute of the season, Alex Cochrane, will be difficult to unseat for Buchanan.

Tom Brady’s interest in the Blues, according to new CEO Garry Cook, is not a “gimmick.”

Before suffering an ankle injury during last month’s 2-1 victory over Wigan Athletic, Laird, 23, had a great start to the season. At the Blues’ training facility, the right-back is recuperating nicely.

The only other players missing are Luke Harris and Alfie Chang, the latter of whom manager Chris Davies removed from the squad list, making him ineligible for League One games.

The most recent Blues injury news is available here.

Dion Sanderson

Injury: Foot

After missing the victory at Wycombe owing to suspension, Sanderson was an unexpected absence versus Leyton Orient. Davies stated: “He has a foot issue. It is simply a foot issue that requires care and time to heal; it is not a fracture or anything of the sort.

If all goes according to plan, the 24-year-old defender, who resumed light training last week, might be considered for a spot on the bench against Peterborough United.

Buchanan, Lee

Ailment: Achilles

Left-back Due to Buchanan’s preseason calf injury, Cochrane has been able to assume his place in the starting lineup. After missing two months due to injury, Buchanan is expected to return shortly.

“He’s had a bit more training time and everything else,” said Davies. It’s great to see him back in the thick of things after the hard effort he put into recovering from his injury.”

Athan Laird

Ankle injury

The right-back’s ankle injury will keep him out of action until next month. Laird, who began the Blues’ first six games under Davies without incident during the preseason, was devastated to hear the news. However, he has removed his protective boot and is beginning weight-bearing activities at the training ground’s gym.
