John Gilligan says Rangers can still catch Celtic this season

Rangers interim chairman John Gilligan says the club supports Philippe Clement and believes Celtic can still be caught in the league.

After John Bennett stepped down last week due to health issues, the former Ibrox director took over as interim chairman.

To help the team overcome the five-point gap to Brendan Rodgers’ side, as well as Aberdeen, who have 15 points after five games, Gilligan has disclosed that more finances will be available in the January window without the need to sell players.

Gilligan stated to Sky Sports News that the team’s ultimate goal is to win the league, taking each stage as it comes.

“Yes, we can fight Celtic and Aberdeen because of our manager and the players we’ve brought in. We are a strong squad, and we play games that we should and can win on a weekly basis.

“Why not?” You must have that belief. If we start doubting and disbelieving, it will spread across the entire place. We cannot have that.”

Regarding Clement, he stated: “It’s been difficult for the manager, and it would be foolish to imagine otherwise. Putting on my supporter hat, the word ‘patience’ is not something football fans excel at, but I would urge the fans to be patient.

“The management has brought in some talented and intriguing young players. He’s attempting to reduce the squad’s age, as well as to correct the trade model, and I believe this is the point at which we should support the manager.

“I’ll put myself on the line here and say we’re behind this manager. This individual has made a lot of adjustments in the background; we’re starting to notice them, and we’re looking forward to the future weeks and months.”
