Belgian linked with return to his homeland
Rangers manager Philippe Clement has been linked with a surprising return to Belgium.
The 50-year-old is well-regarded in his own country, having led Genk and Club Brugge to three titles in four seasons, as well as multiple
cups.
He has had a more tough time at Ibrox, despite initially turning the club’s fortunes around after his hiring last October. He won the
Scottish League Cup in his first few months in charge and went on a long unbeaten streak, although Celtic eventually won both the league
title and the Scottish Cup final.
This season has been a struggle so far, with a major summer overhaul of the squad, being forced to play at Hampden, an early Champions
League exit, and losing 3-0 to Celtic in the first Old Firm derby to fall five points behind in the title race all contributing to a difficult start.
However, Clement remains popular in his home country, and sources in Belgium have linked the former Monaco manager to the open
head coach position at Anderlecht.
The Brussels club fired Danish coach Brian Riemer last week, and Clement has been mooted as a possible replacement, along with former
Bayern Munich and Barcelona great Mark van Bommel.
Clement just signed a contract extension with Rangers until 2028, and he insists he is dedicated to staying in Glasgow for the long term as
he seeks to restore success at Ibrox.
But that hasn’t stopped former Anderlecht, Club Brugge, and Belgium striker Nordin Jbari from naming the Belgian as a strong prospect
to replace Riemer.
He stated: “Philippe Clement prefers to play modern, attacking football. Despite the fact that he formerly played for and managed Club
Brugge, he would be an intriguing prospect. There is clearly a financial factor to it, given that he is at Rangers, and whether he would
consider a move to Anderlecht. But he’s undoubtedly an option for Anderlecht, along with van Bommel.”
