Nathan Jones has made his promotion intentions clear and one player thinks the Addicks are going to keep getting better.

With Nathan Jones‘ team emerging as early favorites for promotion to the Championship at the conclusion of the 2024–2025 season, Charlton Athletic has captured attention with their resolute performances thus far this season.

Even if the Addicks’ relegation struggle from the previous season would be very different from this one, their four wins and one draw in their first seven League One games have established them as a formidable opponent.

At this early point in the season, Charlton Athletic is ranked fourth in the table, behind Wrexham, Birmingham City, and Barnsley. In fifth place, Huddersfield Town is just one point behind the London team.

Prior to their trip to Stevenage this weekend, Jones’ team suffered an unexpected 2-1 home loss to Blackpool last Saturday. Midfielder Conor Coventry acknowledged that Charlton Athletic still needed to improve in his post-match remarks.

Given the Addicks’ excellent start to the League One season, competitors vying for promotion will undoubtedly take heed of the player’s caution that there is “more to come” from the current group.

“We just need to find the right balance of having that strong structure and being hard to play against and also having the fluidity at times,” Coventry said to the South London Press. We should be able to make it. It’s still being worked on. Since our group is still relatively new, I’m certain that we’ll strike the correct balance and succeed.

“I feel like there’s still a lot more to come. The gaffer is improving me a lot. I feel like I’m coming on and want to keep doing that. The main thing for me is team accolades ahead of personal ones.

“I just want us to win every week – that’s the aim for me going into every game. I feel like I’m improving but there’s a lot more I want to see come out of my games.”

Jones has made no secret of his intention to compete with teams like Birmingham City and Huddersfield Town for promotion this season, despite taking over a struggling Charlton Athletic team last season. The Welshman previously enjoyed promotions while playing for Luton Town.

“Yes, we want to get promoted as quickly as possible,” the manager said in response to a question about his intentions at the end of the previous season. However, we want to create a football team that is forward-thinking, sustainable, and dedicated to achieving our objectives. Our goal is to restore this to its former glory as an outstanding football team.

Playing in the highest leagues and getting promoted are two aspects of that. That is our desired outcome. Every task has a deadline, thus I won’t guarantee that we will all receive promotions. We want to do it again next season, of course. Yes, we would like to finish first or in the top two.

“We believe we will accomplish our goal here, which is to achieve something.”
