Sunderland is almost done with an agreement to sign Middlesbrough striker flop for nothing.

The former Boro loanee appears to have identified Sunderland as his future destination.

After being released from Hull City this summer, former Middlesbrough flop Aaron Connolly is rumored to be close to joining with rivals Sunderland.

Connolly has reportedly been in Sunderland’s training facility since Sunday, negotiating a free transfer to join the Wearsiders, according to Roker Report. It comes after the Wear-Tees derby, which saw the Black Cats defeat Boro on Saturday, and a deal is reportedly becoming more likely.

Connolly, 24, was on loan at Boro from Brighton for the second half of the 21–22 season, although he did not leave a lasting impression on Teesside. Even though he was frequently employed by then-manager Chris Wilder, he only scored two heavily-deflected goals in 20 games for the team, and his off-field misdemeanors didn’t exactly help either.

Connolly first went on loan to Italian Serie B team Venezia after leaving Boro, but that stint was short-lived as he later joined Championship rivals Hull City after making just five appearances without scoring.

His loan move to the MKM Stadium was turned into a permanent agreement last summer since he seemed to be happier there. But after suffering from injuries, he was cut by the Tigers, despite only managing eight goals in 29 games.

Connolly hasn’t played for a team since, and it appears that he will be joining Sunderland in the northeast since the Black Cats lack players for their starting lineup. This season, Eliezer Mayenda has tallied two goals and provided two assists; however, Ahmed Abdullahi, a summer addition, will be sidelined until Christmas due to a groin injury.
