Rubén Sellés extended his gratitude to Reading fans following a difficult week that concluded in a 5-2 loss to Bolton Wanderers. Despite
the difficult outcome, Sellés was quick to recognize the team’s unwavering support and assure fans that the squad is fully committed to
turning things around.
Reflecting on the defeat at Toughsheet Stadium, the manager admitted that the first half was particularly difficult, with the Royals
conceding four goals. However, Sellés saw positives in the team’s second-half performance, complimenting their character and willingness
to battle until the final whistle.
“First and foremost, I’d like to thank everyone for their words, emails, letters, and everything they’ve said to me and the rest of the team.”
I believe they understand how we feel, and we will offer all for this football team. There will be no dispute about it. And I think the fans
can tell when the players are giving their all on the pitch, and I expect them to be proud of their team.
Obviously, we are unhappy with the loss, but the support for the team was incredible. It has been fantastic all year, and we understand
that this is another difficult time for the football club, but we are determined to fight with everything we have to keep the team stable.”
Reflecting on the match…
“Saturday was a challenging game. We knew traveling to their house would be difficult, and surrendering four goals in the first half is
something we’d nearly never done before. Two penalties and one free kick are an unusual combination of goals to concede. We also had
our moments around their goals, particularly when we were 2-0 and 3-1 down, but we failed to capitalize. Then, in the second half, we had
a clear plan for how to approach the game; we believed there were more goals for us. We played well, dominated the ball in possession,
made rapid assaults, had chances, struck the woodwork…but it didn’t work out for us.
The boys gave their all for this club, and I’m proud of their efforts, but it means nothing for now, so we’ll work hard during the week to
improve for the weekend. Another positive takeaway is that you sometimes have to go through those periods, as we did in the first half, to
continue improving as a team. And I believe we demonstrated our personality and spirit by keeping the ball down on the ground and
attacking the back line. So, despite conceding, which we will certainly work on, we can draw positives from the game.
Ben [Elliott] is a good illustration of that. He’s been playing pretty well, and I believe he’s been in the lineup for eight or nine months. We
understand the type of player he is and what he can become. When we compare how we played when he first joined 15 or 16 months ago to
how he now influences games and forms solid partnerships on the pitch, he has made enormous development, and we are thrilled with his
goal tonight. So we must continue to advance to this level.
But first and foremost, rehabilitation is critical, so we’ll use the next few days to rest, spend time with family, and then spend the rest of
the week preparing for Huddersfield – so it’s just one day at a time.”
