Peter Schmeichel says Luis Diaz was ‘lucky’ during Liverpool win v Bournemouth

Peter Schmeichel believes Luis Diaz was ‘lucky’ in Liverpool’s win over Bournemouth.

Liverpool rebounded from their previous Anfield setback by defeating Bournemouth 3-0 on Saturday.

Arne Slot has had a successful week, securing his first Champions League win over AC Milan and three points against the Cherries.

The Nottingham Forest defeat was well-deserved, and the team’s performance was lackluster, but same complaints cannot be made for the most recent showing.

Luis Diaz, a key player for Liverpool this season, scored twice against Bournemouth, bringing his total to five Premier League goals.

Top players punish even minor errors, and Chelsea loanee Kepa Arrizabalaga surely had a game to regret.

Kepa raced off his line like a youngster given too much fizzy drink, ending himself in no man’s land and allowing Diaz to score into an empty net.

Before Kepa could recover, Liverpool scored again, with Trent Alexander-Arnold feeding Diaz with a wonderful weighted pass that he fired between the goalkeeper’s legs.

Peter Schmeichel said that Kepa might have done better for Liverpool’s opening goal, calling it a ‘crazy moment’ from the player.

However, the great goalie believes Diaz was ‘lucky’ for his second goal, which he shot past Kepa’s legs since players generally chip the keeper at that point.

In an interview with Premier League Productions (21/09/24 at 8:10 pm), Schmeichel described the Colombian star as a ‘interesting’ player and lauded his early season performance.

Luiz Diaz scored twice for Liverpool against Bournemouth.

“The first one, for sure (Kepa makes it easy for Diaz), it’s one of those, we call them crazy moments where you make a decision and halfway through, and you can’t recover from that,” Schmeichel told reporters.

“The second one.” We discussed Diaz’s inability to score goals despite having several opportunities. We witnessed the two opportunities he missed. Only if he had a finisher on him could he score twice in two minutes.

“I wouldn’t say the second goal was a tremendous finish; he got lucky there. If you look, I believe many strikers would have chipped Kepa. There is a small space between his legs, which runs through there. Today, everything went well for him. He’s such a fascinating player because he has so much energy, he works hard for the club, he doesn’t score enough goals, but he scored two tonight and five overall this season, so he’s doing well.”

When Slot succeeded Jurgen Klopp, many Liverpool supporters were unsure what to expect from their new manager.

For certain, the majority supported the Reds to keep their Champions League status, but they were unclear about the rest.

Liverpool squandered their chances of winning the Premier League championship in Klopp’s last season. If there hadn’t been so many injuries and declines in form among important players, the German’s season could have ended perfectly.

Mohamed Salah has returned to form, but Trent Alexander-Arnold is also doing well for both club and country.
