Keith Hackett reacts to Leeds United controversy v Cardiff after wrong law accusation

Keith Hackett reacts to the Leeds United controversy v Cardiff after the wrong law accusation.

Keith Hackett has stated that Joel Bagan’s red card was the right call as it denied Leeds United a chance to score against Cardiff.

In response to a fan’s suggestion that referee Josh Smith incorrectly applied the law to Bagan’s tackle on Wilfried Gnonto outside the Cardiff box, the former FIFA official remarked on X on September 23.

Gnonto immediately got up, but Smith stopped play for the free kick and sent the Cardiff defender straight to the penalty area, only to be hauled back by Bagan in the box.

After giving the incident some thought, Hackett said, “I’ve looked at the red card.”

“Play in one way towards the goal? Sure, what is the likelihood of controlling the ball? Indeed, was it a foul? Indeed.

“He applied the law; the DOGSO (direct obstruction of a goal-scoring opportunity) law was fulfilled and the sanction was appropriate.”

After Hackett resolved the debate around Bagan’s red card, all eyes will be on Daniel Farke’s club’s performance against a severely undermanned team at the bottom of the table.

Even though the Whites led 1-0 after just seven minutes thanks to a breakaway goal from Larsi Ramzani, Cardiff’s reduction to ten players did not make the game easy.

After then, the Peacocks struggled to take advantage of their opportunities, and the second half saw a sharp slowdown in play that resulted in booing from the away end.

It wasn’t until Joel Piroe’s game-winning goal in the 87th minute that the score was ultimately 2-0, as Farke had finally blinked and brought in the Dutchman as one of numerous late substitutions from the bench.

Cardiff, who are without a manager, have many reasons to be concerned after a sixth game without a win and a red card, but Farke will also be left wondering about Leeds’ performances against strong teams.
