Ex-Sunderland boss Alex Neil linked with Hearts and Cardiff City jobs after latest round of sackings

Following the most recent series of firings, former Sunderland manager Alex Neil was connected to positions at Hearts and Cardiff City.

Ever since he left Stoke City in December of last year, the former Sunderland manager has been unemployed.

One of the front-runners for the Hearts position is former Sunderland manager Alex Neil, who has also been connected to Cardiff City.

Hearts fired manager Steven Naismith on Sunday after suffering eight straight losses. With Hearts, the 38-year-old former Everton and Rangers player placed third in the Scottish Premier League the previous year.

Hearts, on the other hand, are currently bottom of the league after suffering a 2-1 loss to St Mirren in their opening six games. As a result, former Sunderland and Norwich City manager Neil has been identified as one of the favorites to take over.

Following his departure from Stoke in December, Neil has not had a job. After being appointed during the second half of the 2021–22 season, the 42-year-old did manage to gain promotion from League One with Sunderland through the play-offs. Neil’s name has also been tangentially associated with the Cardiff City position following Erol Bulut’s dismissal on Sunday.

Neil has a stellar resume that includes multiple promotions in the EFL and Scotland. Three times, Neil has helped teams move up from different divisions: once with Hamilton Academical from the Scottish Championship, once with Norwich City from the Championship, and once with Sunderland from League One through the play-offs and a thrilling victory over Wycombe Wanderers in the Wembley final.
