Sahin’s club enjoyed a good start to the season, with two league wins and a 3-0 Champions League victory over Club Brugge. There were warning signs, however, as they toiled for 75 minutes in the match in Belgium before substitutes Jamie Gittens and Serhou Guirassy delivered in the closing 15 minutes.
Boss Sahin had intimated that he was dissatisfied with the way performances were going, and all of his concerns were realised on Sunday evening. Travelling to Stuttgart, they were thrashed 5-1, with former Brighton striker Deniz Undav opening and finishing the scoring on a night to forget for BVB. It was certainly the worst outcome of Sahin’s brief tenure, and he lashed out after the game, stating it was a result and performance he ‘never wants to see again’ from his squad.
“That was naturally sobering,” he exclaimed. “Totally deserved from beginning to end. That was extremely horrible. Almost nothing happened in the duels. The basics were missing. Forget the methods we discussed. Something similar occurs when the fundamentals are lacking.
“One does not see that coming. We were unified and had a positive attitude at the end of training yesterday. The fact is that Borussia Dortmund cannot represent itself in that manner. It’s the first time this has happened to me. That was an absolute non-performance.
“I can’t add anything to what you witnessed on the pitch. I don’t want to see such a performance from my team ever again. We’ll strive to get fit by Friday (against Bochum). “I will not accept this as a coach.”
