Anthony Taylor in fresh controversy after being removed from duty amid investigation

Brighton versus Nottingham Forest saw three red cards following Morgan Gibbs-White’s challenge on Joao Pedro with Anthony Taylor working as fourth official in the match at the Amex.

Referee Anthony Taylor has once again been embroiled in controversy after showing three red cards in a minute during Nottingham

Forest’s match against Brighton.

Taylor served as the match’s fourth official after being removed from officiating duty over the weekend after being harassed by online

trolls following the game between Bournemouth and Chelsea. On that occasion, the 45-year-old issued a club record 14 yellow cards, as

well as two to coaching staff.

Vile vitriol was directed at him on social media, with some individuals offering death threats against the official and his family. The

Premier League planned to examine the abuse, and Taylor was also promised assistance by the PGMOL.

The referee may be forgiven for expecting a peaceful weekend, but he was once again at the center of the action when Morgan Gibbs-

White was sent off for a second yellow card. The former Wolves midfielder made a wild challenge on Seagulls attacker Joao Pedro from

behind.

Rob Jones, the game’s referee, looked to suggest that the Forest star won the ball with his hands immediately after the tackle, but he was

quickly given a second yellow card for the move. Gibbs-White was stunned by the judgment and, after attempting to make his point to

Jones, was spotted yelling at Taylor on his way off the field.

Fabian Hurzeler and Nuno Espirito Santo both received marching orders as a result of the incident. The former appeared to lose his cool

over the initial delay in making a judgment, while the latter unleashed his displeasure on Taylor and then Jones after the red was

awarded.

“The referee issued a second yellow card to Gibbs-White for a reckless challenge on Pedro,” the Premier League Match Centre’s social

media feed stated. “Fabian Hürzeler and Nuno Espírito Santo were both sent off for their unacceptable technical area behaviour following

the incident.”

Rui Pedro Silva, Santo’s assistant, was also booked and talked with the media after the 2-2 draw. “My perspective from the bench, I think

the tackle from Morgan was a little bit speedy, but he touched the ball,” he told me.

“So in that time, I didn’t realize it was a second yellow. I was behind, and I had no idea what Anthony Taylor had heard from the coaches

to warrant two red cards. For me, that is not a second yellow. I understand they want to contain the emotions on the bench; work done,

game over.”

Brighton coach Andrew Crofts admitted they were ‘upset’ with Gibbs-White’s challenge on Pedro. “The tackle on Joao looked like it wasn’t

a great tackle,” according to Crofts.

“We were upset about it. The reaction is to watch what the referee does. I didn’t notice it because I was chatting with another gamer. The

next thing I saw were red cards for the managers.”
