During the Barclays Premier League era, some legendary players wore the renowned red and white of Sunderland.

From 2001 until 2016, the bank sponsored the top flight, producing notable players with unique skill sets, personalities, and unforgettable events.

Stephane Sessegnon, one of Sunderland’s most technically skilled players, helped define the Barclays period.

January purchases usually carry some risk since time is of the essence and teams are under extra pressure to make deals that can improve their fortunes.

Despite Sessegnon’s impressive credentials, the rumored £6 million cost was a risk for the North East club. However, the gamble was worthwhile as the Black Cats aimed for a European finish.

Sunderland signed Sessegnon at the end of the January transfer window. Steve Bruce signed Benin international Sulley Muntari on loan from Inter Milan, making him the club’s second important acquisition this season.

Bruce praised Sessegnon’s versatility, stating, “Stephane can play on the left, right, or through the middle – he’s lightning quick and a match-winner.”

“He’s a tiny powerhouse with a low centre of gravity, excellent dribbling abilities, and a terrific shooting. I believe he’ll be a tremendous hit with the fans. I anticipate he’ll become a fan favourite.”

In credit to Bruce, he was correct, as the small magician went on to deliver numerous moments of pure elegance for the Black Cats, making him a memorable Barclaysman.

Stephane Sessegnon created moments of greatness for Sunderland.

After signing Sesegnon in January, Bruce’s team went on a nine-game losing streak, shattering their ambitions of reaching European football.

The Black Cats improved towards the conclusion of the season, winning three of their last five games. During the run, Sessegnon delivered impressive performances, scoring three goals and assisting two.

During the 2011/12 season, the magician entrenched himself as a fan favorite with some genuinely sparkling displays in red and white. Operating anywhere in the front line, the player had the capacity to completely change the game with his mobility, deception, and ability to easily defeat a guy.

In his second season at Sunderland, the midfielder contributed seven goals and nine assists to the team’s 13th-place result.

Although the club was not endowed with goals, Sessegnon and Seb Larsson’s moments of magic contributed significantly to the Black Cats’ merited league finish.

 

Selling Stephane Sessegnon to West Bromwich Albion was an error.

Despite contributing seven goals and four assists for the Wearsiders in 2012/13, manager Paulo Di Canio transferred the midfielder to Premier League rivals West Brom in the summer of 2013.

Di Canio’s decision to let Sessegnon leave was attributed to the loan signing of Fabio Borini. Despite Borini’s success, supporters were dissatisfied with Sessegnon’s departure.

West Brom paid a club-record amount for the midfielder, exceeding their previous value of £6.5 million for Shane Long, according to BBC Sport.

Sessegnon spent three seasons with the West Midlands club, but never reached the same heights as his time at Sunderland. He will always be known for wearing the red and white shirt.

Given the Roker Men’s collapse, selling Sessegnon was a mistake, since the midfield maestro delighted Sunderland fans with his match-winning performances.

Sessegnon, an attacking midfielder, proved to be a great addition for Sunderland, delivering exceptional performances.

Sessegnon exceeded Bruce’s expectations with his pace, tenacity, and match-winning abilities, establishing him as a real Barclaysman.

Unfortunately, the fan favourite’s time at the Stadium of Light was cut short, and many will wonder what might have happened if he had stayed on Wearside.
