September 1992 – Falkirk 4 Celtic 5, ticket price £6

Falkirk is our opponent today. We have had many great games against them in the past, including a thrilling nine-goal match in 1992.

One such remarkable encounter occurred during our league duty trip to Brockville in September 1992.

The ancient ground was filled to capacity, mostly with Celtic fans who had come in large numbers. They would depart with lifelong memories of seeing one of the best football matches ever.

The first half passed quickly, ending in a 1-1 draw between the two teams, both of which came from penalty kicks two minutes apart. Dariusz Wdowczyk is scoring for us. Even so, Tony Mowbray’s deliberate handball that resulted in the Bairns spot kick had reduced us to ten men.

That didn’t stop us, as Gerry Creaney gave us the lead quickly after the restart as things appeared to be improving. However, the football gods had other plans.

Falkirk scored three goals in a thirteen-minute period to take a 4-2 lead. Suddenly, things appeared dire, especially because we were down a man, and Falkirk realized this and went for the kill in the hope of more goals against our stunned and fragile defence.

But with twenty minutes remaining, Andy Payton gave us hope when he pulled one back, and the Bairns were a bit rattled. Suddenly, the game’s outcome was in the balance.

When Gerry Creaney equalized in the 77th minute, just when it appeared that all was lost, the Celtic supporters went into a frenzy. It was a genuinely amazing recovery.

Given that we were down two goals and playing with 10 men, a point would have been an excellent outcome, but this is Celtic, after all. The team that, despite some uncertain times, never quits up until the very end.

The Celtic fans in the little ground were ecstatic when John Collins scored a goal that only he could while time was running out. With 89 minutes remaining, there was no chance for the Bairns to make a comeback.

Celtic had recently prevailed in an iconic football match. Ten men down 4-2, up 5-4 winners. A great game played in a difficult time. A match that those who there will never forget, certainly worth £6, watch the highlights below..
