Karlan Grant sends two-word message as West Brom go top of the Championship

Karlan Grant has given his reaction after he continued his strong start to the season in West Brom’s 1-0 win over Plymouth Argyle yesterday.

Grant has enjoyed a comeback season with the Baggies, and he used his X account to send a two-word greeting to Albion supporters, expressing his excitement as he and his teammates extended their unbeaten league record to six games at the start of the new season.

The 27-year-old has spent the most of the last 18 months on the sidelines at the Hawthorns or on loan, but he has emerged as a key member of Carlos Corberan’s team this season and appears to be seizing his opportunity.

He used the two-word phrase “Saturday dubs” on X to sum up his side’s triumph over Wayne Rooney’s Greens, with Josh Maja scoring a second-half winner to keep Albion top of the Championship as early pacesetters this season.

Grant was expected to go out on loan again this season after a spell with Cardiff City last season, according to the Express & Star’s Lewis Cox, but he has remained in the Baggies squad for the new season, starting all six league games and scoring his first goal of the season in a 2-1 away win at Stoke City.

Prior to Saturday’s game at the Hawthorns, manager Corberan backed the 27-year-old to maintain his rebirth in blue and white for the remainder of the season.

“During the QPR game, he had a great opportunity, but the goalkeeper made an excellent stop. “He scored against Stoke City,” he told the Express and Star.

“He had a great opportunity against Leeds, and he scored a header against Portsmouth. He always has moments that prove he is present. He had an opportunity the other day when he didn’t kick the ball well, but he’s always there. His innate instinct is that he is capable of doing these things.

“Having a goal-scoring player is a good thing. Normally, the striker scores goals, but there are other positions that can assist you.”

He has clearly justified Corberan’s faith in him this season, and the Plymouth game was no exception, as he put on another strong performance to assist his side secure all three points.

Grant has had ups and downs in an Albion shirt

Grant was expected to do big things when he arrived in the West Midlands in October 2020, having signed for a reputed £15 million from Huddersfield Town, but he struggled to make the move up to the top flight with West Brom, who were relegated in his first season.

He regained his form in the Championship, scoring 18 goals and assisting six times, and was a highlight throughout the season, despite the Baggies’ significant dip in form in the second part of the season.

The 2022/23 season was not as beneficial for the attacker, as he lost his place in the starting XI halfway through the campaign with the club at the bottom of the second division, which corresponded with a significant improvement in their performances, and he only started five games after December.

Last summer, he joined fellow Championship club Cardiff City on loan, and he was a constant component of Erol Bulut’s side throughout the season, but he never quite reached his prior heights and returned to the Baggies at the start of the summer, apparently at a crossroads in his career.

He was able to reclaim his place in the starting XI this season under Corberan, despite initial injuries, and has been there on merit thus far, while Mikey Johnston and Lewis Dobbin have been dropped.

Grant will hope to continue to play an important role as they strive for success in the second tier, and he, like the rest of his colleagues, does not appear to be slowing down anytime soon.
