Wolves in dire situation as Gary O’Neil provides Yerson Mosquera injury update after Aston Villa

On Saturday afternoon, Wolves suffered a double whammy when they lost 3-1 to Aston Villa and Yerson Mosquera was stretchered off.

When Wolves took the field against Aston Villa, they were aggressive right away, pushing high and exerting some control over the game to unsettle the hosts.

Matheus Cunha gave Gary O’Neil’s team the lead after 25 minutes, demonstrating the admirable desire of the team. However, similar to the Newcastle game, the Old Gold collapsed in the second half.

After Ollie Watkins pulled Villa level in the 73rd minute, Wolves suffered their fourth loss in five league games as goals from Ezri Konsa and Jhon Duran ensured that there could only be one winner.

On Saturday, O’Neil had to deal with more than just a defeat to the Villans; in the 82nd minute, center-back Yeerson Mosquera was stretchered off.

Wolves player Yerson Mosquera’s injury report is provided by Gary O’Neil.

For the third straight game, Mosquera and Craig Dawson started together, and the young Colombian played a strong majority of the match.

When in possession, the 23-year-old rarely showed signs of weakness and was a formidable defensive player. Eight minutes from time, unfortunately, a magnificent defensive performance was cut short.

After being carried out on a stretcher, he was replaced by Santiago Bueno, who had little opportunity to get comfortable as Villa scored two goals in the closing minutes of the match.

With just two senior, fit center backs, Wolves were left in a terrible scenario.

After failing to maintain a clean sheet in 17 games, O’Neil is left lamenting Wolves’ inability to sign a center-back this summer. As it stands, the Wanderers have just two senior central defenders to choose from.

His main choices right now are veteran defender Dawson and Bueno, as Toti Gomes is recovering from a knock and Mosquera appears to have a serious injury.

The 18-year-old Bastien Meupiyou was the sole center back that the Wolves signed this summer, but fans haven’t seen him play yet.

With no obvious successor in place following the loss of captain Max Kilman to West Ham, Wolves’ precarious position after just five games of the season speaks volumes about how ill-prepared they were.

Now that O’Neil is probably going to play Dawson and Bueno together at home against Liverpool next weekend, supporters should be bracing themselves for the worst.
