JUST IN: Sunderland 1 Middlesbrough 0: Chris Rigg stars at Stadium of Light

With a brilliant finish that sent Sunderland back to the top of the Championship standings and a Wear-Tees derby triumph against Middlesbrough, CHRIS RIGG further cemented his growing reputation. Although Rigg only turned 17 in June, Regis Le Bris has made the academy product a fixture in the first squad, and his most recent goal is undoubtedly the high point of his senior career thus far. Rigg broke the deadlock near the conclusion of the first half by casually backhealing the ball home after being forced incredibly wide as he rounded Seny Dieng.

Despite Boro controlling possession for a large portion of the game, Sunderland’s defensive tenacity and superb organisation limited the visitors to few opportunities, therefore they deserved to win. Romaine Mundle’s post strike in the closing moments of the game nearly doubled the Black Cats lead. Tommy Conway struck the bar with a header for Boro early on, but even with ** percent of the ball, Michael Carrick’s team failed to really test Anthony Patterson and instead looked aimless throughout the duration of the second half.

This has been the story of Boro’s season thus far in many ways: loads of possession, few clear-cut opportunities, and a dangerous propensity to give up chances as a result of careless defensive errors. For the majority of the afternoon, Boro lacked fluidity; yet, if Conway’s header in the fifth minute had fallen just a fraction of an inch lower, the outcome would have been different. Conway fed Isaiah Jones down the right side, and the winger flicked a ball into the 18-yard box. The summer signing from Bristol City for Boro then headed against the top of the crossbar.

Sunderland’s players were content to remain relatively deep and give up possession to Boro’s midfielders and defenders, who found it difficult to convert their possession domination into clear-cut opportunities because they had a goal advantage to protect. Before Emmanuel Latte Lath’s stretched shot went over the bar, negating Boro’s last chance of the first half, Finn Azaz fired at Anthony Patterson and watched another long-range attempt ricochet over off Dennis Cirkin’s head. The home crowd had been yelling for a penalty just moments before, but although Mundle went down in the area, Ayling’s hand was on his back, albeit with very little contact.
