Ipswich Town is considering a move to acquire a “fantastic” £200k-p/w ace for McKenna, who is not desired by his current club.

Ipswich Town now eyeing move to sign “fantastic” £200k-p/w ace for McKenna.

Ipswich Town are one of two clubs considering a move to sign an out-of-favour international ace in the January transfer window, according to a report.

Ipswich heavy spending yet to pay off

Having advanced from League One to the Premier League on consecutive occasions, Ipswich was among the teams with the most activity during the transfer window as they sought to strengthen their roster.

In an attempt to stave off a direct return to the Championship, they made significant investments in their squad after securing manager Kieran McKenna’s future in the face of interest from across the top flight.

The Tractor Boys spent heavily, with Omari Hutchinson spearheading the effort to convert his loan move into a permanent one for a little under £20 million. They also raided the Championship to bring in Arijanet Muric, Jacob Greaves, Jack Clarke, Dara O’Shea, and Sammie Szmodics.

Ipswich Town’s new signings summer 2024
Player Fee (as per Transfermarkt)
Omari Hutchinson €23.5m
Jacob Greaves €21.5m
Liam Delap €17.85m
Jack Clarke €17.7m
Dara O’Shea €14.2m
Sammie Szmodics €10.6m
Arijanet Muric €9.55m
Chiedoze Ogbene €9.5m
Conor Townsend €590k
Jens Cajuste Loan
Kalvin Phillips Loan
Ben Johnson Free

Liam Delap and Kalvin Phillips, both of Manchester City, were also signed; Delap secured a long-term contract at Portman Road, while Phillips joined the East Anglian team on loan.

The East Anglian team is just two points above the relegation zone after four Premier League games, and despite this transfer activity, there are still holes in the squad. McKenna is still waiting for his first Premier League victory as a manager. The team has lost to Liverpool and Manchester City and drawn to Fulham and Brighton.

Consequently, more transfer activity is anticipated in January, and a prospective target has now surfaced.

Ipswich keen on £200k-a-week defender

This coincides with The Sun’s report that McKenna’s team is considering a surprise January signing of Chelsea outcast Ben Chilwell, who is trying to find a way out of Stamford Bridge.

Enzo Maresca publicly labeled the England international a misfit during the summer, and the Blues manager gave an explanation:

“I need to make a decision because it is not good for them or for me to train every day and not receive any minutes.”

“It’s probably best to get out and get some minutes. We’ll wait and see what transpires as the transfer window is open.”

Chilwell was reintegrated into the first team and named among the starting lineup after failing to find a move away.

However, it is evident that Chelsea does not care for him, and with Marc Cucurella and summer signing Renato Veiga ahead of him in the pecking order, it is probable that he will be released. The Blues are eager to eliminate his £200,000 per week salary. Ipswich are reportedly on “red alert” regarding a prospective January transfer, which is expected to be a loan move due to the England international’s wage demands, according to The Sun. His arrival may facilitate some rotation for the current fullback, Leif Davis, who excelled in the Championship but has been exploited in the opening phases of the Premier League season due to his defensive capabilities. In the interim, Ipswich would acquire a player in Chilwell who was termed “excellent” by his former manager, Frank Lampard, and who possesses a compelling argument to prove.

“I believed that Ben Chilwell’s contribution was exceptional in every respect.” He scores a goal, contributes an assist, and consistently participates. During his initial tenure with the club, Lampard stated, “He is Premier division-ready; we are aware of this fact due to his exceptional performance in this division for Leicester, and he appeared to have been with us for an extended period.” This could potentially be a move that is mutually beneficial and enhances Ipswich’s prospects of survival.
