For the most of the Sunderland match, Michael Carrick thought Boro should have been playing against ten men.
In the Wear-Tees derby, Michael Carrick was left wondering how Sunderland hadn’t gone down to ten men very early. The Boro boss believed Trai Hume ought to have been sent off for challenging Emmanuel Latte Lath.
Just beyond the area, the Sunderland full-back challenged Boro’s striker while Finn Azaz attempted to slip the Ivorian in behind. Replays of the incident revealed that Hume, who was booked for the heavy challenge, may have been lucky to only receive a yellow card.
That was undoubtedly the head coach of Boro’s thoughts after the game, when he asked how in the world Hume continued to play in a match that Carrick’s team would eventually lose 1-0 at the Stadium of Light.
“It’s 100% a red card for the challenge on Manu,” stated Carrick. I fail to see why that hasn’t been provided. It comes down to when is the line of time for me. Because they don’t want to send someone off, they say it’s too early and it’s a yellow card when it occurs so early. When does it turn into a red card?
“I’m not sure. I find it to be a little ambiguous. It’s difficult to understand why that isn’t provided, however I’m not sure whether that is the cause.I may add that I have just calmly discussed it with the fourth official rather than the referee.
Carrick went on to say that Felling’s choice had a significant effect on the outcome: “Given his temperament, he was able to finish the game. It’s a significant choice. We’ve come here twice with me as manager, and both times there have been red cards, which significantly affected the outcome of the match.
“That was today. We talked about playing at the edge without going over it, about managing it and about going out. I felt like we did a great job handling that. However, we were depending on it when things didn’t work out the way we had hoped.”
