After joining this summer, one Sunderland recruit is “very close” to seeing action.
In their upcoming Championship match, the Black Cats will take on Middlesbrough in an attempt to avenge their loss to Plymouth Argyle.
Regis Le Bris will be praying that his team’s most recent setback is just a temporary setback and that they can resume their winning ways from earlier in the season, when they secured four straight victories.
Following the defeat, it may be a case that Le Bris looks to refresh his side with some of the new signings that were brought in towards the twilight of the summer transfer window, and one that could likely feature is new arrival Wilson Isidor, who has previously impressed in substitute appearances and games for the under 21s.
Many will be expecting that he is given his first Sunderland start since his arrival, and Le Bris has disclosed whether or not he would be used right away.
Wilson Isidor is “very close” to starting for Sunderland.
Le Bris has been strengthened by a number of attacking alternatives this season, but rather surprisingly, Spanish striker Eliezer Mayenda has cemented his place in the starting lineup after a stellar 2024–25 Championship season in which he scored two goals and provided an equal number of assists.
Le Bris has disclosed that Mayenda has been undroppable thus far, and if it weren’t for the 19-year-old’s form, it’s probable that we would have seen more from Isidor at this time.
“I think that Wilson [Isidor] is very close to that now,” Le Bris stated, as reported by Sunderland Echo. Then, as was the case, for example, with Romaine Mundle and Eliezer Mayenda, it comes down to dynamics and possibilities.
He will therefore get his chance to play when the dynamics are appropriate, and since I have faith in him, I know he will be prepared.
The training sessions [Mayenda’s ending] demonstrate it. He can score with either his left or right foot.
“He has a powerful shot and is very quick.” Additionally, he is eager to score.
Naturally, it relies on the circumstances and potential possibilities that arise throughout a game.
“He may go for two, three, or even six games without scoring at times, but he will still put in a lot of effort for the team.”
Wilson Isidor needs to exercise patience and bide his time.
Isidor’s ability and potential contribution to Sunderland this season are undeniable, but it has become much harder for him to make a name for himself due to the play of players like Mayenda and Romaine Mundle, who has excelled in replacing the late Jack Clarke.
Le Bris’ remarks suggest that Isidor has the ideal mindset to continue giving his all in training even in the unlikely event that he is given the chance to debut soon in the league. This will undoubtedly serve him well when the time comes for him to make his mark.
If Sunderland lost to Middlesbrough in the league for the second time in a row, Le Bris might decide to shake things up, which would probably result in Isidor getting a chance. For now, though, all he can do is show himself in training and grab the chance when it presents itself.
