The notion on social media that Sunderland are about to sign a free agency striker is ‘wrong’.

Social media rumour claims Sunderland are set to sign free agent striker, it's 'false'

Sunderland made effective use of the free agency market this summer.

Sunderland’s experience with free agents has been inconsistent.

Kristjaan Speakman, the sporting director, signed four players for £0 this summer.

Ian Poveda, Alan Browne, Simon Moore, and Blondy Nna Noukeu joined Stadium of Light on free transfers this summer.

Browne has been the star thus far, but the Irishman has been ruled out for the encounter against Middlesbrough this weekend due to a minor knee issue.

Poveda has not received much playing time because to the abundance of offensive players, which is a welcome challenge for Regis Le Bris.

On Thursday, reports began to circulate on social media that Sunderland were about to recruit a free agency striker, despite the fact that the striker department was still rather light.

Aaron Connolly of Hull City during the Sky Bet Championship between Sheffield United and Hull City at Bramall Lane on January 20, 2023 in Sheffield...

James Copley refutes Aaron Connolly to Sunderland rumor.

It was reported on social media that free agent striker Aaron Connolly was scheduled to have a medical with Sunderland ahead of a transfer to Wearside.

The Irish striker was released by Brighton in 2023 and signed a one-year contract with Hull City due to injury worries for the 24-year-old.

He scored eight goals in 23 Championship games before leaving. He was linked with many Football League teams throughout the summer.

But he will not join Sunderland. Journalist James Copley posted on X.

“As you’ve probably already guessed, I’m told the Aaron Connolly-is-signing-for-Sunderland-tomorrow rumour that is doing the rounds online is false.”

Does Sunderland need to sign any free agents right now?

Sunderland’s first-team roster appears to be robust during the summer transfer market, especially after deadline day.

With Ahmed Abdullahi’s injury and the inexperience of Eliezer Mayenda and Wilson Isidor in the Championship, adding another striker might have been beneficial.

So Connolly’s move to Sunderland makes sense.

But he has injury difficulties, and the fact that no club has signed him yet may indicate that many have opted against a move for Connolly.

He is an experienced striker who is still relatively young and had a respectable goal return in the Championship last season.

If he can show his health, he will join a top team, maybe in the Championship, where he may face Sunderland at some time this season.
