Birmingham City receive transfer windfall after League Two club signs free agent.

Birmingham City nurtured a player who has now joined a League Two team, earning them some money in the process.

Birmingham City has benefitted from the signing of defender Rico Browne by Walsall.

A new club has taken the 20-year-old, who was among numerous players who left St Andrew’s in the summer, over a

month into the season. He agreed to a one-year contract with the Saddlers that includes a one-year option to extend.
The bargain comes with a price tag because, as the CEO of Walsall, Ben Sadler, revealed on social media,
Birmingham held Browne captive for the entire summer.

He was offered a contract, but he declined to stay at St Andrew’s; hence, Birmingham was still entitled to payment.

Luckily, Birmingham and Walsall reached a quick and agreeable agreement, meaning that Browne’s next club would

“I’ve felt very at ease since I arrived, and the head coach’s plans for the remainder of the season fit what I was looking for.”

Browne joined Birmingham from Elche six years ago, but he never played for the club in a competitive match.

However, he did play for the Birmingham under-18 and under-21 sides. The St. Kitts and Nevis under-17

international is now expected to advance to League Two, which is two divisions above where he was playing last

season, after spending part of the previous campaign on loan with Rushall Olympic in the National League North.

Birmingham and Walsall are in the same EFL Trophy group, but the two teams have already faced off, with the

visitors winning on penalties at the beginning of September to earn a bonus point. If everything goes through by

Friday at noon, Browne might make the move, subject to EFL approval.
