The way Spurs lost against Arsenal on Sunday was another instance of the team’s incapacity to manage set-piece circumstances.

With Gabriel Magalhes’ winning header against Tottenham, Arsenal had scored three goals from corners in their last four meetings.

But Tottenham’s problems with set pieces are not limited to their match against Arsenal; since Ange Postecoglou took charge, only Nottingham Forest has given up more set pieces goals than Tottenham (18 total). (Sky Sports)

Following Arsenal’s defeat, Postecoglou stated, “I know, I know, for some reason people think I don’t care about set pieces and it’s a narrative that you can keep going on for ages and ages,” in an attempt to reassure supporters that his squad does practise set pieces. Despite the widespread belief that Postecoglou avoids set-pieces during training, Ange and the Spurs practise them, and Nick Montgomery is in charge of coaching in that area, according to a Daily Mail article.

After Chris Davies left Spurs to join Birmingham City this summer, Montgomery came to the team and has been in charge of instructing the team on both offensive and defensive set-pieces ever since.

While Gabriel’s game-winning header raised questions about Spurs’ set-piece management, there is reportedly a feeling within Tottenham that Montgomery is still reliable and has helped the team defend set pieces.
