‘Too much’ – Vladimir Weiss reacts to Celtic Park jeers and defeat

Vladimir Weiss handled the expected boos from Celtic Park fans with ease. The former Rangers player, who formerly wore the renowned Ibrox blue, openly stated that his previous statements regarding Celtic were “silly” things that a young athlete says, and that he is no longer the same guy.

Weiss, now captain of Slovan Bratislava, witnessed his team being completely demolished by a surging Celtic, suffering a humiliating 5-1 defeat.

He believes that if he had converted a fantastic opportunity while the game was still goalless, the outcome would have been different. Ultimately, he could only watch Brendan Rodgers’ squad play “fast, modern football.”

“(The booing) was fine,” Weiss stated after the contest, which CeltsAreHere attended. “I do not take it personally at all. It’s been a long time, but I’m glad they remember me!” he added with a wry smile.

Reflecting on the game, Weiss knew his team was in for a difficult night, but he couldn’t help but wonder how things might have turned out if he had converted that early chance. “We expected a really difficult game, and it was. But I believe I had a good chance at 0-0; if I had converted, perhaps things would have been different. Unfortunately, it was not to be.

Weiss praised their present form under Rodgers. “They demonstrated their quality tonight. They played so quickly that we struggled to keep up at times. We had done our homework and viewed some videos of them, but it was a very different team than I remembered. Fast, modern football was too much for us in the end.”

Despite the occasional provocative comment regarding Rangers’ Glasgow rivals, the Slovakian international remembered fondly on his brief spell with the club. “I adored my time at Rangers. I was young and had only been here for a year, but I made some dumb comments about Celtic back then. I’m a different person now, but this was all part of the rivalry. I was hoping for a better outcome tonight, but that’s football.

Weiss saw a stark contrast between his Slovan club and Celtic, who are now a formidable force under Rodgers. But, in the end, he accepted the greeting and the outcome with grace, knowing full well that football fans in Glasgow will never forget.
