Callum McGregor in ambitious Celtic Champions League message

Callum McGregor believes Celtic will do well against Borussia Dortmund and Atalanta in their next Champions League games.

Brendan Rodgers’ team will face two far stiffer tests in UEFA’s elite club competition next month after defeating Slovan Bratislava 5-1 this evening.

The Scottish Premiership champions had a solid start to the new league round, scoring three points and aiming to reach the play-offs.

McGregor dominated midfield as usual, and Celtic kept the Slovakians confined to their own half for much of the game.

“Yeah, it was great,” the 31-year-old said about the night. “I think you can tell everyone had a great time. I thought we started the game well, and we certainly achieved our goal. Both teams were still figuring things out.

“At halftime, we felt we had a few levels to go, and the start of the second half was fantastic. We blew them away.

“We then conceded a goal, but we responded superbly and scored two more to put them away.

“It was a great night. I hope the supporters liked it as much as the players did.

“This represents the group’s next stage of growth and development. We’ve always believed that getting off to a good start was crucial.

“Bratislava is a good team, but we were expected to win.” We arrived here full of belief, as did the fans in the stadium, and you must now deliver. The players did it.

“It’s a wonderful start for us, especially in the second half, given the quality of our goals.

“I believed we were quite threatening on the counterattack as well. The team defended well, worked hard, and blocked spaces; you must defend at the correct times in the Champions League.

“That’s a well-deserved three points. We’ll rest up and go again at the weekend.

“We want to win our home games.” We have two difficult matchups coming up after tonight, but this should boost our confidence.

“We’ll go play some football and see what happens; we want to give these teams a game. If we display what we accomplished tonight, maybe we can.”
