Ready to pull the trigger” – Future claim made on 49ers and Daniel Farke as pressure on Leeds United builds.
Daniel Farke signed a four-year deal at Elland Road upon joining Leeds United, a move the team said was a statement about the mid-to long-term development of the team under his leadership.
Promotion has been Farke’s team’s goal all season after relegation in 2023. However, 90 points was insufficient to keep the team in the top division, thus the team had to start a play-off campaign for the first time since Marcelo Bielsa supervised a two-leg loss to Derby County in 2019.
Even though the German manager of Leeds was able to save his job, the loss to Southampton was always going to have an ongoing effect. Since then, he has had to make a lot of difficult decisions as manager during the summer window, particularly in light of the exits of Archie Grey, Georginio Rutter, Crysencio Summerville, and
Even with such key players of last season’s efforts departing, Leeds fans will have optimism that they have the required depth and quality in their ranks to mount another promotion push by the time the window closed. But the loss to Burnley, after good wins in the two games prior, has seen doubt grow among the fanbase regarding Farke.
The fact that the former Norwich manager has won the Championship twice and is aiming to make it three straight seasons from the second level after narrowly missing out on automatic promotion the previous season should reassure many unprejudiced supporters.
But as the season came to an end, Farke faced criticism from a number of supporters because, despite having a sizable advantage, he was unable to overtake Ipswich Town for second place.

The long-term plan for Leeds United and Daniel Farke
Although some Leeds supporters have been putting pressure on Farke recently to earn promotion even more this term than previous, the manager was given permission to assist with oversight and had a major part in recruitment this summer.
According to Football Insider reporter Pete O’Rourke, there is pressure on the 47-year-old to lead Leeds to promotion. Leeds’ executives anticipate returning to the Premier League for the 2025–2026 season, so he must turn things around quickly or else he will probably be fired.
After failing to impress Norwich City in the top tier previously, the issue of how his team and tactics would work in the Premier League should he get promoted this season will arise. Is Farke, therefore, Leeds’ best option going forward? Kris Smith, a resident Leeds United supporter on FLW, was the person we asked.
Given that the Championship is a lesser division this year than it was the previous, he stated: “I do still think Farke has what it takes to get this Leeds team out of the Championship.”
We lost to Southampton in the play-offs and ended third behind Ipswich, so I believe Farke has problems.
“They, unsurprisingly, get brought up whenever we have a bad result, like the Burnley one that has just been.
“There is plenty to like about Farke in this division. Look how well we counter-press, and how good in general we are out of possession, plus how swift we are on the counter in transition.
“But, looking more long-term, there are issues. Especially if we are looking to hopefully get to that next level and with promotion back to the Premier League.
“I can’t see Farke being the man to help us consolidate in the top tier. Some of his decision-making and management of games, for me, would be a real issue; it would be exploited in the top-flight.
“It’s concerning how he switches players about and how he attempts to dismantle defences that are strong while we’re trying to win the game.
“That would likely remain in the Premier League, and I don’t think he could fix it.” Additionally, it hasn’t really worked for him, as we’ve seen twice with Norwich City.
“Alright, I believe we would really spend more money supporting him than Norwich did, but what about the 49ers? I wouldn’t be shocked if they were prepared to fire Farke as soon as we were promoted to the Premier League.”
Pressure grows on Leeds United and Daniel Farke
There is always going to be pressure on a manager if he fails to get a side of such quality in the Premier League at the second time of asking because Leeds still has one of the strongest squads in the second division this season.
In addition to the specific difficulties Farke faces in breaking teams down in the depths, there’s also the matter of Leeds’ potential development in the Premier League, where the teams that make it are typically better suited to the lower leagues.
Naturally, as was the case with Burnley the previous season and Southampton thus far this one, it is challenging to transition from a dominant side to one that sees less of the ball and does not have the technical advantage over their opponent.
Despite Smith’s right to point out that he has shown himself to be the ideal candidate for the position in this league and that he should make the Whites competitive this season, there are longer-term issues that will surface if Leeds are promoted in 2024–2025.
Planning for whichever division they are in next term is something Paraag Marathe, Gretar Steinsson, and company should take into account during the season.
