Newcastle United hierarchy warning issued as Alan Shearer fears dramatic exit after £70m fail

Alan Shearer has commented on Newcastle United’s disappointing end to the transfer window and wants to see more communication.

Newcastle United star Alan Shearer expressed his fear at St James’ Park following the public outburst between Eddie Howe and sporting director Paul Mitchell.

Shearer is unhappy that Howe is being left to fend for himself in press appearances following Mitchell’s harsh words and forthright assessment that the scouting department is no longer fit for purpose. With Newcastle in the Premier League’s top three, Shearer says it is the last thing Howe needs as manager.

Shearer stated that Eddie stressed the importance of alignment at the start of the season. You can tell it’s not in Newcastle.

“For them to move forward, something has to change. Clearly, there was a disagreement on their recruitment, and I thought that they failed the management throughout the transfer window. There was no mistake about what he wanted: a centre-back, and he wanted Marc Guehi, but for whatever reason, they were unable to sign him.

“The sporting director’s answers were: ‘Yes, I speak to Eddie every day.’ When the question is put to Eddie, he claims he hasn’t spoken to him in a few weeks. Then Eddie is asked a question about Paul Mitchell’s comments about the football club’s transfer policy not being fit for purpose, and Eddie responds that he is extremely pleased with the transfer business we’ve done under his leadership.

“So plainly, the club needs to work together to go where it wants to go. At the moment, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that’s not the case; going forward, that must alter.”

Newcastle suffered a terribly disappointing finale to the window, and Shearer sympathises with Howe given the severe PSR constraints imposed on him. Howe has questioned the positions of CEO Darren Eales and Mitchell, citing a perceived lack of support for him.

The iconic number 9, speaking during the Match Day Live broadcast, added: “We’ve discussed the PSR rules and legislation, and they don’t sit well with me in terms of what you have to do to adapt and make them work.

“Especially with a club like Newcastle. Now you can say anything you want about the Saudis owning Newcastle, but they are extremely wealthy. They can afford it and compete with the big boys in the same way as Aston Villa can. At the moment, they are being stopped by doing this.

“I understand that the big boys do not want to step in and challenge, but those laws do not set well with me. As a result, they must work around the regulations, just like any other football team. They possibly got rid of two promising players on the rise, Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh, who they did not want to sell.

“There was money to spend because they bid between £60 and £70 million for Guehi, so there was certainly money there. But for Newcastle to improve and continue to challenge, individuals in key positions must align and work together; otherwise, one of them will leave.”

Glenn Hoddle, Shearer’s co-pundit and former England manager, agreed with the club’s all-time record scorer’s views, saying: “The director of football and manager must work together. It is the most significant interaction and communication channel for the football team.

“It is critical, and nobody is on the same page. It appears that a split has already occurred.

“They need to sit down and communicate. Eddie was fantastic in how he answered his questions, but he had to keep them focused on football and not deviate from the topic.”
