Marc Guehi speaks out as Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish’s gamble backfires with Newcastle

Newcastle United discontinued bidding for Marc Guehi due to Crystal Palace’s demands.

Marc Guehi, a Newcastle United target, said that he ‘has to do better’ during a challenging afternoon against Leicester City.

Despite being 13 years older than Guehi, Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy easily outpaced the England international to score the opening goal at Crystal Palace. Guehi was also one of the Crystal Palace players that failed to deal with James Justin’s cross, which led to Stephy Mavididi’s second goal for Leicester at Selhurst Park.

Crystal Palace may have recovered to earn a point in a 2-2 draw, but Guehi was the first to admit it was a ‘difficult day’ with ‘a lot of unforced errors’ when the Eagles skipper came on at full time.

“A bit of concentration for us, especially myself,” he announced. “I think I can do much better. I need to support the team a lot more and do my job a little better…I like to put a lot of pressure on myself, so I need to do better.”

Guehi has had a difficult start to the season, having been hailed as a generational talent by Steve Parish in one of the many interviews the Crystal Palace chairman conducted while Newcastle attempted to sign the 24-year-old. Parish wanted’superstar money’ for Guehi, which always seemed like a gamble for a player with less than two years left on his contract, especially given the centre-back’s recent form.

Newcastle halted formally bidding for Guehi weeks before the window closed last month due to concerns that the Eagles’ demands exceeded the club’s budget. Whether the move is revisited in 2025 remains to be seen – Crystal Palace will have to lower their proposed £70 million asking price for a player with even less time on his contract – but Parish has since stated that the Eagles ‘want to be selling to clubs like Newcastle who have great aspirations’.
