Disgraced ex-Raiders coach Jon Gruden eyeing college head-coaching job

Over the last two seasons, former head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders Jon Gruden has been on the sidelines of the NFL rather frequently, despite his lawsuit against the league and Commissioner Roger Goodell.

It’s evident that Gruden still hopes to coach in the not-too-distant future since he has shown up to the mini-camps and training camps of the Kansas City Chiefs and the New Orleans Saints.

Ruden responded, “Yeah, I’m interested in coaching.” “When I first met my wife, she was a cheerleader at Tennessee; my dad was a college coach, and I was a college coach at Pitt. Yes, please, I would like to coach. That is all I can promise: I know I can employ quality personnel, I know I can help a team succeed, and I know I can assist young players develop. However, I would really love to coach at any level.

CBS Sports reached out to a few athletic directors to enquire about the possibility of Gruden being reinstated as a coach. Everyone seemed to agree that it might be, given the circumstances and the school.

Gruden was branded as “untouchable” by one SEC AD, but appointing him seemed to be more acceptable to others at lower-tier universities.

Would I interview Jon Gruden right now if I were in the market? Indeed, most likely,” a Group of Five AD remarked. There would be no excuse not to. Now, I wouldn’t do it if I was in Florida. It’s not the appropriate moment or fit. It all hinges on choosing the proper job. A Group of Five [school] allows you to take more calculated risks, among other things.

After a slew of hacked emails via the New York Times exposed Gruden for using misogynistic, racist, and anti-LGBTQ+ language between 2011 and 2018, while he was a commentator for ESPN, his reputation as a coach was practically given the death penalty.
