Cowboys HC Mike McCarthy Could Be Replaced by ‘Rising, Bright Football Mind’

After the Dallas Cowboys’ disappointing 44-19 loss to the New Orleans Saints on September 15, head coach Mike McCarthy is facing some criticism. While fans are frequently the first to demand for coaches and players to resign, some members of the media are joining in and suggesting coaches to replace McCarthy. One NFL writer and analyst believes he knows the “perfect” option to fill in for the Cowboys.

Klint Kubiak Could Be One of Jerry Jones’ ‘First Calls This Offseason’

According to Joe Summers of Sport DFW, the Cowboys vs. Saints game “made clear” the “perfect” McCarthy replacement.

“New Orleans offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak is quickly becoming a popular head coaching candidate,” the NFL writer and expert observed. “Derek Carr led the Saints to scores on every drive in Week 1 then continued that streak into the 4th quarter against the Cowboys, giving Jerry Jones a perfect look at someone who could replace McCarthy once he’s let go.”

He continued, “Just like in 2023, Dallas was outmatched by superior schemes. Kubiak is a promising football mind who might be one of Jones’ first contacts this offseason.Aside from the obvious strategic blunder of hiring a lame-duck coach, Jones should investigate other options. McCarthy will coach for the remainder of the 2024-25 season, but someone else will almost definitely take over after that.

Other Candidates to Replace Mike McCarthy

Coaching the Cowboys is a big job, and many other coaches would be in the running if Jerry Jones wanted to replace McCarthy. According to a September 16 story in Sport DFW, Devon Platana suggests three potential coaching choices for the Cowboys, none of which are Kubiak.

The author recommends Bill Belichick as the ideal coach to replace McCarthy and lead the Cowboys to the Super Bowl.

“Belichick and the Cowboys seem like a match made in heaven, especially if the latter wants to end their playoff futility,” according to him. “Belichick joining the franchise might hinge on Jones giving up some of his general manager duties given the former’s hands-on style, however, that’s a sacrifice worth making if it means returning the Lombardi Trophy to America’s Team.”

In January, Yahoo! Sports asked Jones what he admired about Belichick. Jones’ response aroused eyebrows, leading some to believe Jones was receptive to the notion of having Belichick coach the Cowboys.

“I know him personally and like him,” Jones stated. “I have no doubt that we could work together. None. None.”

Platana proposed Ben Johnson, offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions, and Steve Spagnuolo, defensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs, as potential replacements for McCarthy.

“Signing Johnson would also show Cowboys fans that the franchise is ready to move into a new era,” Platana said about Johnson.

“After the defence crumbled against the Saints, it’s clear that the Cowboys could use someone like Spagnuolo,” he said of the Spagnuolo possibility.
