Blackburn Rovers must take John Eustace action now as reputation grows: opinion.
John Eustace was brought in by Blackburn Rovers in February following the departure of Jon Dahl Tomasson.
Under former manager Tomasson, Blackburn Rovers enjoyed success, pushing the team to the verge of the playoffs and assembling a team that could produce some excellent football at Ewood Park.
Ultimately, though, his winter departure was the right one. Uncertainty off the pitch hampered Rovers’ progress, and as their on-field play deteriorated and they got closer to the relegation zone, their relationship with the Danish manager soured.
John Eustace assumed control at that point and was charged with steering the club away from the drop. The 44-year-old came to Birmingham City with a point to make following his unexpected exit.
He successfully led Blackburn Rovers to survival. It came down to the wire, though, as a Sammie Szmodics brace on the penultimate day of play secured their Championship place for another year in a victory over league winners Leicester City.
Against the odds
From there, it was all uphill from there. Off the pitch, Rudy Gestede took over as head of football operations, replacing Gregg Broughton and several other key individuals.
But Eustace remained in charge, and he did a terrific job.
There are just three teams remaining in the Championship with an undefeated record, including Blackburn Rovers, following a successful preseason and active summer transfer window. After five games, they have won three and drawn two, placing them third in the standings and well clear of the relegation battle that many had predicted they would find themselves in once more.
That is something Eustace should be seriously acknowledged for, and it ought to take the shape of a new agreement.
The current terms
Eustace signed a contract with Blackburn Rovers that would last until 2026 after arriving in Lancashire. It was a wise decision because the club wouldn’t have to pay out a sizable deal if things didn’t work out and they were demoted and decided to make a change.
But given his diligent and productive job, their manager’s name is growing, therefore, it’s time to get him committed to a longer contract at Ewood Park.
The contract has more than 18 months left, so there’s no urgent need to take action right now. But it’s best to act sooner rather than later, as this will help deter future interest in Eustace should his performance continue, and it would be a just reward for his efforts thus far.
Following a severe dismissal from Birmingham City, Eustace appears to put Blackburn Rovers back on the same path as the Blues. Despite the unpredictable ownership, it makes for exciting times in Lancashire, and securing Eustace a long-term contract would only serve to sustain the positive vibe among supporters amidst their outstanding season opener.
