The £40m missing from surging Celtic financials as booming transfer influx signals seismic bank balance

The £40m missing from surging Celtic financials as booming transfer influx signals seismic bank balance.

The club had a busy summer – but a host of transfer deals failed to make the annual accounts.

Premiership champions Celtic boasted a blockbuster £77m in the bank in their latest set of financial results – but the true figure is likely to be even MORE.

Brendan Rodgers’ side won the league and Scottish Cup last season and the totals from up to June 30, 2024 showcased the full rewards to playing in the Champions League and the Hoops’ domestic dominance. But off the back of a busy summer window a number of sales have been left off the list. The £2million banked for Sead Haksabanovic as he left for Malmo occurred before the deadline and are included in the results – but a host of bumper deals are missing from the payday.

Oh Hyeon-gyu left for Genk soon after the Montenegro international, however the £4.5 million the team paid to acquire him will be added to the total for the next season. The departure of academy graduates Daniel Kelly (£400k), Rocco Vata (£237k), and Bosun Lawal (£3m) all contributed to an increase in Parkhead’s finances last summer.

The departure of academy graduates Daniel Kelly (£400k), Rocco Vata (£237k), and Bosun Lawal (£3m) all contributed to an increase in Parkhead’s finances last summer.

However, Matt O’Riley’s record-breaking £26 million sale to Brighton, coupled with Mikey Johnston’s departure on deadline day to sign a £3 million contract with West Brom, was the window’s biggest seller. In the last stages of the transfer window, Tomoki Iwata also left the team, paying an undisclosed price to join Birmingham City. Additionally, the modest fees paid for players like Benjamin Siegrist and Yuki Kobayashi increased Celtic Park’s revenue once more.

The Parkhead board wasn’t afraid to spend big money, and several newcomers also signed documents after it was too late to be reflected in the books. Goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel was a free agent, and Aston Villa’s backup Viljami Sinisalo cost £1 million.

Paulo Bernardo (£4.5 million) and Adam Idah (£9 million), the loanees, finalise their respective permanent loan agreements with Benfica and Norwich City. Celtic held off on making significant financial acquisitions until deadline day, when defender Auston Trusty arrived from Sheffield United for £5.5 million and Arne Engels arrived for £11 million, shattering the Parkhead transfer record. Luke McCowan signed a £1 million contract with Dundee to round off his summer spending binge.

They also took in almost £40 million in deals from the summer, while spending £32 million on new acquisitions. There is still at least £8 million that can be added to Celtic’s growing financial account.
