The £40m missing from surging Celtic financials as booming transfer influx signals seismic bank balance

The club had a busy summer – but a host of transfer deals failed to make the annual accounts

Brendan Rodgers’ side won the league and Scottish Cup last season and the totals from up to June 30, 2024 showcased the full rewards to playing in the Champions League and the Hoops’ domestic dominance. But off the back of a busy summer window a number of sales have been left off the list. The £2million banked for Sead Haksabanovic as he left for Malmo occurred before the deadline and are included in the results – but a host of bumper deals are missing from the payday.

Oh Hyeon-gyu headed out the door shortly after the Montenegro international for Genk – but the £4.5m the club banked for the player will be added to the tally for next year. The exit of academy kids Bosun Lawal (£3m), Rocco Vata (£237k) and Daniel Kelly (£400k) also helped boost the Parkhead coffers last summer.

But the big sale of the window came from the their record sale of Matt O’Riley £26m as he joined Brighton – while Mikey Johnston left on deadline day to join West Brom for another £3m. Tomoki Iwata also left the club in the final stages of the window – joining Birmingham City for an undisclosed fee. And nominal fees for the likes of Yuki Kobayashi and Benjamin Siegrist boosted the Celtic Park coffers again.

The Parkhead board weren’t shy in splashing the cash – and a host of incoming arrivals also put pen to paper too late to be included in the accounts. Goalkeepers Kasper Schmeichel arrived for nothing while back-up Viljami Sinisalo came in for £1m from Aston Villa.

Loanees Paulo Bernardo (£4.5m) and Adam Idah (£9m) make their respective loan deals from Benfica and Norwich City permanent. Celtic saved their big money deals for deadline day with Arne Engels coming in for £11m – and smashing the transfer record at Parkhead – with defender Auston Trusty coming in from £5.5m from Sheffield United. Luke McCowan rounded off the summer spending spree in a £1m deal with Dundee.
