Martin reveals why Southampton sold a starlet he hoped to keep.
Saints manager Russell Martin said he would have loved to keep Jayden Meghoma, but the offer from Brentford was too good to let no.
Meghoma, 18, joined the Bees on deadline day for an initial £5 million fee, which could increase to £10 million.
The England youth international, who was in the final year of his contract, earned Saints a significant profit just two years after signing from Spurs, with Sam Amo-Ameyaw.
Martin stated that his priority was to maintain Meghoma, but that became more difficult once he chose not to sign a new contract.
Meghoma was on the bench for Brentford’s match against Manchester City over the weekend, and his road to the first team might become clearer at the Gtech Community Stadium.
Brentford lacks out-and-out left-backs, although Southampton is well-stocked in that position, with Brazilian Welington expected to arrive in January.
Martin stated, “We would have preferred Jayden to accept the contract we offered, which was a great deal for a player his age.”

“Jayden has gone to where he believes he will have more opportunities sooner. I disagreed with him, but we will have to wait and see.
“The club obtained a very excellent price. Making a huge profit on him at such a young age is extremely beneficial to the club’s finances.
“I hope he has a successful career because he is a top talent, an exceptional player, and a great young man.
“He follows everyone’s best wishes. Hopefully, he enjoys himself and accomplishes what he wants there.
“However, it’s unfortunate for us as coaches not to be able to work with him any more. We couldn’t have done more as a club.
“So, if someone isn’t going to sign a new contract, you strive to obtain the greatest offer possible. I believe Rasmus, Phil, and the rest of the team did an excellent job.
“I believe it demonstrates to young athletes that there is a road and a platform from which to pursue other opportunities. It’s a fantastic decision for Jayden and for us, and everyone can go forward.”
