Marco Gabbiadini says Sunderland man needs ‘to be looked at’ after ‘stupid’ decision vs Plymouth

On Saturday, Sunderland lost in the league for the first time since Regis Le Bris took over.

Before this weekend, Sunderland would have had some of the strongest support in the Football League, if not the entire Championship.

With a flawless record in tow, the Black Cats traveled to Devon to take on Plymouth Argyle.

As for Wayne Rooney’s Plymouth, they were without a league victory and ranked 22nd in the Championship standings heading into last weekend, with Sunderland in first position.

However, Plymouth defeated Sunderland 3-2 on the day, overcoming an early goal by Patrick Roberts and then taking the lead again through an equalizer by Ronan Mundle.

There were a few unlucky incidents and individual mistakes made by players all over the field, most notably Dan Ballard’s own goal.

Although there hasn’t been much criticism of one or two players elsewhere, it has been directed towards them after the 2024–25 season got off to a still incredibly excellent start.

After a few performances in the previous year, Patterson faced criticism, and his dubious distribution was frequently brought up.

That was visible at times against Plymouth, as demonstrated by one instance in which Patterson collected the ball but immediately threw it out to a Plymouth player.

Former Sunderland striker Marco Gabbiadini, a BBC pundit, stated on Total Sport: “The goalkeeper needs to be looked at.”

“A terribly foolish clearance he granted… exhibited strong winger defense, collected the ball in his hands and promptly returned it to them, and in less than two seconds, they were able to shoot.
