Former Manchester United academy star Axel Tuanzebe praised for start to life back in the Premier League

Former Manchester United academy star Axel Tuanzebe praised for start to life back in the Premier League.

Axel Tuanzebe, a former defender for Manchester United, has impressed manager Kieran McKenna at Ipswich Town with his league debut.

After graduating from the United Academy, Tuanzebe made 37 appearances for the senior squad.

When he led the senior team against Rochdale in the Carabao Cup in 2019 and “shut down” Kylian Mbappe in United’s Champions League victory over Paris Saint-Germain in 2020, he displayed glimpses of his enormous potential.

However, injuries severely limited his United career; he was only able to make more than 10 appearances in a season during the 2020–2021 campaign.

In 2023, following a few fruitless stints on loan at SSC Napoli and Stoke City, he finally joined his former United coach, Mckenna, at Ipswich Town.

The 26-year-old has had a great start to life in the Premier League, starting at right back in each of Ipswich’s first four games.

He made seven clearances and won 80% of his ground duels during the Tractor Boys’ thrilling 0-0 draw at Brighton & Hove Albion over the weekend. He looked impressive.

When discussing Tuanzebe’s success this season with the media (via TWTD), his manager McKenna stated that he was “really happy for him as well with the journey that he’s been on.” He was without a contract at this time last year, had hardly played football in perhaps a few seasons, and there were concerns about his capacity to resume playing as many games as he had.

But as time has passed, he has become stronger and stronger. He performed quite well at the end of the previous season, and he has stepped up and demonstrated his abilities this one.

The Ipswich boss then commented on how difficult Tuanzebe’s job is as a full back due to the immense quality and variety of wingers that compete in the Premier League, such as Brighton’s Kaoru Mitoma last weekend.

Commenting further on his performance, he stated, “I think he enjoyed the battle and he did a really good job in that duel and was well supported by his teammates.”

“Another good step for him and with him and Ben, we’re really, really strong in that position.”

Tuanzebe will get the chance to play against his old side when United travel to Portman Road on the 24th of November and he will return to Old Trafford in February with the newly promoted side.
