Crystal Palace and Ipswich eyeing £50m Chelsea man in January, as secret Enzo Maresca plan revealed

Crystal Palace and Ipswich are eyeing a £50 million Chelsea man in January, as a secret Enzo Maresca plan revealed.

Ben Chilwell, a left back for Chelsea, is being considered for a move by Crystal Palace and Ipswich Town. Meanwhile, a story has surfaced that explains the real reason for the defender’s return to training and his inclusion on the Blues’ Premier League roster.

During the summer, Chilwell was a member of the group of first-team players Chelsea intended to sell and had no intention of employing, dubbed the “bomb squad.” Most of those players—Raheem Sterling from Arsenal, Armando Broja from Everton, Trevoh Chalobah from Crystal Palace, and Romelu Lukaku from Napoli—were successfully offloaded in one way or another.

However, left-back Ben Chilwell chose to stay, and because most transfer windows have already closed, the 27-year-old is stuck at Stamford Bridge.

However, a recent report from the Sun suggests that Chilwell, who cost Chelsea £50 million when he signed from Leicester in 2020, may be leaving in January. They said that the defender is being “tracked” by both Crystal Palace and Suffolk Town in the Premier League in anticipation of possible winter window raids. It was unclear which interest group would prefer a permanent purchase or a six-month loan arrangement.

The rationale behind Chelsea and manager Enzo Maresca’s decision to reintegrate Chilwell into their plans, however, is now evident. In fact, Chilwell has returned to training this week after being benched throughout the summer and was included in the 25-man Blues squad for the opening half of the Premier League season.

Give Me Sport claims that Chelsea brought Chilwell back into the fold in order to avoid risking their hopes of landing a January signing.

The article explained that Chilwell playing reasonably frequently between now and then is Chelsea’s greatest chance of attracting significant interest. It’s true that teams might be hesitant to make a move for a player who has missed the previous half of a season.
