Completed transaction: ‘Blessed’ former Sunderland player revealed by new team

Bryan Oviedo, a former Sunderland defender, has committed to a new squad. Bryan Oviedo, the former full-back for Sunderland, found a new club and was welcomed with great fanfare. The 34-year-old has made his way back to his home country of Costa Rica to sign with LD Alajuelense. According to news source La Nacion, he arrived “like a meteorite.” Oviedo left his boyhood club in 2010 to join FC Copenhagen in Denmark, and he hasn’t played domestic football in his own nation since.

He has since played for FC Copenhagen once more, Sunderland, Everton, Nordsjaelland, and most recently, Real Salt Lake of the MLS. During his two and a half seasons at the Stadium of Light, Oviedo made 77 appearances in all competitions as the Black Cats were repeatedly demoted from the Premier League to League One.

La Nacion claims that the veteran’s arrival back in Costa Rica couldn’t have come at a better moment for Alajuelense, his new squad. The defender is believed to have been brought in as a last-minute replacement for fellow countryman Rónald Matarrita, who will likely be out for a considerable amount of time after having to undergo surgery for appendicitis.

Oviedo has signed a deal that will keep him at Alajuelense until the following year. Judging from the way La Nacion covered his announcement, club officials are happy to have signed a player who has made 81 senior international appearances for Costa Rica.
