Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher learned lately about the nickname West Ham United fans called Craig Dawson while he was at the London Stadium. Craig Dawson moved on a season-long loan from Watford to West Ham back in October 2020. For an extra £3 million, the Hammers made his move to the London Stadium permanent in the summer of 2021 (The Sun). West Ham fans were dismayed by the 34-year-old center back’s January 2023 sale to Wolves for an estimated £3.3 million, since he had asked to join a team closer to his family’s home in northern England.

During his two and a half years in East London, what a tremendous player he was for us. During his time with the Hammers, he was actually our best center-back—certainly the most reliable. He was a true cult figure, and he was also immensely popular with West Ham fans. It’s hardly shocking that he was given such a brilliant nickname by the Hammers faithful.

Lead analyst Bill Leslie interrupted Carragher’s praise of Dawson to point out how popular the 34-year-old was at the London Stadium. “Coming full circle, isn’t Craig Dawson an old school product?” Leslie remarked. 50th game of the Wolves season, and more than 500 overall. Balon Dawson asks, “They liked him at West Ham, didn’t they?”What’s that, Balon Dawson? “Hey!” Carragher asked with a laugh. Dawson gave a response that showed how much he enjoyed the nickname the Hammers supporters had given him.

Craig Dawson, West Ham’s cult hero

Dawson played 87 appearances for West Ham and scored nine goals. Of those goals, his most notable came away at Lyon in the 2022 Europa League quarterfinal. He personified everything that it means to be a Hammer with his undying commitment, never-say-die attitude, and passion for the jersey.

It was unfortunate that he joined Wolves in January 2023 in an attempt to be closer to his family, but the supporters were behind him when he departed. Craig Dawson was a genuine fan favorite at West Ham, and Jamie Carragher has just found out just how popular he was in East London. The one and only Balon Dawson is still deeply missed at the London Stadium.
