Ref Watch: Were Anthony Taylor’s 14 yellows cards during Bournemouth vs Chelsea justified?

AFCB v Chelsea – Highlights & Reaction from “record breaking” night

On Saturday night, referee Anthony Taylor made history as the first to issue 14 yellow cards in a single Premier League game.

Taylor managed to throw out more cards than he’s likely to receive himself at Christmas in an unusual officiating performance during a game that didn’t deserve it. The referee exacerbated the situation by issuing bookings for certain offenses but ignoring others if they had already received a yellow card. This became increasingly challenging as the game progressed.

The most obvious examples of this occurred with Lewis Cook and Marc Cucurella. Chelsea fans would undoubtedly be bewildered as to why Cook was not issued a second yellow card at some point, while AFC Bournemouth supporters would be similarly perplexed as to why Cucurella was not sent for an early shower.

Aside from Taylor’s record-breaking, spotlight-stealing performance, the Cherries dominated the majority of the game, hitting the crossbar through Marcus Tavernier, the post through Ryan Christie, missing a penalty by record-signing Evanilson, and conceding a late goal to lose all three points.

Man of the match against Chelsea

AFC Bournemouth’s head coach, Andoni Iraola, spoke with Sky Sports after the game.

“We played quite well. We had a lot more opportunities than them. Their goalkeeper, in particular, made the difference. He was the best player on the field.

“I will not discuss the referee. I’ve been chatting, but it’s not working. I’ll attempt the opposite: don’t talk and see what happens.

Iraola told the Daily Echo…

“I believe we were the better team today, and we certainly deserved to win.

“But it’s true that when you, especially against this kind of opposition, you miss a penalty, you hit the crossbar, you hit the post, you miss more chances.”

“The other keeper is good, you can think in one moment of the game they will make a good connection, they will hurt us, and it was what happened at the end.”

I will never understand how we failed to score at least one goal. This is the second time this season that we have been robbed because we are unable to finish.
Second, the Christie for Scott sub is perplexing and never works. Always stops our midfield movement and puts us on the backfoot.

Regardless of the outcome, we performed well tonight and made a very talented team appear average. It just feels like one of those evenings where nothing goes in. Proud fan!

A great game of football, especially in the opening half by our team.

We lost a game that we could have won, but that is what happens when you are not clinical and put the ball in the net.

I was stunned Evanilson took the penalty because I didn’t think he would score.

I thought young Kerkez had a good game.

Tavernier was unlucky with his early shot, which struck the crossbar; he deserved a goal.

The referee issued yellow cards for what appeared to be mild infractions on occasion.

We’re not sure why our manager got booked.

AFCB attempted 19 shots, 7 of which were on target.

Chelsea fired 10 shots, three of which were on target.

Attendance was 11,235.
