Ghirls defeat Jags to kick off their league comeback.

After defeating Partick Thistle 3-0 on Sunday afternoon, Celtic FC Women got back to winning ways in the SWPL.

On their travels, the Hoops secured all three points thanks to a double from Shannon McGregor and a goal from Murphy Agnew in the first half.

The Ghirls returned to league action this weekend, building on their exploits in the UEFA Women’s Champions League last week.

Elena Sadiku’s team traveled to Kirkintilloch to play Partick Thistle, a fellow Glasgow team, with the intention of building on the victories in Lithuania.

With a hectic few weeks ahead of her, the Celtics manager was able to make six alterations to her starting eleven.

Shannon McGregor, who was making her second start in green and white, was one of those players who managed to hold onto their spot in the starting lineup.

And by opening the score in the first few minutes of play, the midfielder contributed to the Celts’ ideal start to the game.

Following an early free kick into the area that found its way to Amy Gallacher at the back post, McGregor was there to head the ball into the back of the net after the Celtic number seven floated a pass to the back post.

The Hoops put up a strong overall performance, putting extra pressure on Partick Thistle in the first forty-five minutes.

Left- and right-wing deliveries were putting the home team in serious jeopardy, and that was how Celtic scored their second goal of the match.

Murphy Agnew met Jenny Smith’s fantastic cross into the area at the front post and headed the ball into the top corner of the net.

The attacking players were able to flourish because of the Celtics’ play near the penalty area, as several outstanding movements nearly resulted in goals in the closing third.

That dominance carried over into the second half, as Kelsey Daugherty was hardly ever put to the test in goal.

At the hour, McGregor scored her third goal in as many games, thus sealing the three points.

The counterattack appeared to be stopped as the Thistle goalkeeper made a few prompt adjustments.

But Cavanagh recovered the lost ball and fed McGregor, who finished impressively from range to find the bottom corner.

As the half went on, Celtic attempted to increase the score, but regrettably, substitutes Mathilde Carstens and Saoirse Noonan were unable to hit the back of the net.

Emma Lawton, who signed on deadline day, made her debut against her old team thanks to a move made by Sadiku. The full-back had a good first game for the Hoops.

On a bright day in Kirkintilloch, three goals would guarantee Celtic all three points as the Ghirls returned to winning ways in the SWPL.

The Celts’ next assignment is another quick turnaround away from home, where they will be visiting Montrose this Thursday night.
