Gary Lineker addresses Match of the Day bias accusations after Liverpool match

Gary Lineker discussed accusations of bias thrown his way from Nottingham Forest fans following their stunning victory over Liverpool

On the most recent episode of The Rest is Football podcast with Alan Shearer and Micah Richards, the commentator addressed the

accusations leveled at him by Forest fans. It was a spectacular weekend for the team, which maintained their perfect start to the season

with a 1-0 victory over Liverpool at Anfield, their first win at the stadium since 1969.

Given the significance of the victory, some may have expected the match to air first on Match of the Day on Saturday evening. However, it

was knocked off top spot by Aston Villa’s comeback victory over Everton and was eventually relegated to second place.

This allowed Lineker to address concerns from Forest fans about alleged prejudice against them on Match of the Day. “It’s interesting

with Forest, a lot of their fans think that us on Match of the Day, we really don’t like them and [that] we don’t give them their flowers

Micah or their petals,” he told me.

“So they grumbled a lot, and they were saying, ‘They’re gonna have to say something positive about us, they’ll hate that,’ which is actually

entertaining because one of our producers, Finchy, is a big Forest supporter, and our floor manager Marco is also a Forest fan.

“I always find it quite amusing that fans think that we could probably be against their particular side and be biased against them.”

Richards asked Lineker how much control he had in the show’s running order, and the former England great revealed that Forest were

originally slated to headline Saturday’s (September 14) episode after negotiations with editor Richard Hughes.

“Rich and myself talk through it but I think it generally picks itself, it looked almost certain that Forest would lead the show yesterday and

then obviously another incredible comeback by Villa against Everton with that incredible goal from Duran.”If you’re picking the game of

the day, that probably just edged Forest, which we believed would likely lead but came in second. Forest are fifth in the Premier League

rankings and one of only five teams left this season that have not lost a game.
