Following Roses’ loss to Burnley, Leeds United head coach Daniel Farke issued a calm message to the team’s supporters.
On the eighteenth minute, Clarets winger Luca Koleosho scored the game’s lone goal after Manor Solomon slipped and raced 70 yards to score a fantastic solo goal.
Leeds was pitted against a visiting custodian in formidable form at James Trafford, and they were unlucky not to have had a penalty when Joe Worrall challenged Solomon from behind in the first half.
However, Farke feels that despite some fans’ criticism of United’s performance after the game, especially during a very quiet second half where Burnley’s containment strategies worked,
Especially considering Leeds had hardly any group training time on the pitch prior to their players’ departure, with comfortably over ten players on international service.
“With 13 players out, we know that no other team at this level has experienced this much disruption during the international break,” Farke said. This is great news for us because it shows that we have guys of calibre serving overseas as well. The opening game is typically a little more sentimental, though.
“I am even more upset in the outcome because I thought we had a really great performance.
“It will also be extremely tough after the next international break since, I believe, our next game (Friday, October 18, vs. Sheffield United) is already scheduled, and I’m not sure whether all of the players will be able to make it.
We have no control over the situation, so we have to adapt. No one objects.
“I’m disappointed at the referee as much as that we didn’t take our chances.
Not just one team, but one of the strongest contenders for the championship, came to town. It was encouraging to defeat them so handily and to be able to declare that we have come a long way, even though we still need to integrate a few (new) players.
“I am aware that talking about a loss is never easy after one. However, I am excited and don’t think the integration
process will take too long.”
“Maybe we have increased our chances of promotion with the bookmakers right now,” he said.
“I feel bad for the guys because we played such a dominant game and they would have deserved better than to lose after such a trying two weeks filled with “loads” of travelling and other activities.
“But I am also aware that this league is a long haul. It would have been easier for us to continue from a leading rather than a pursuing position if we had won the first game (after the break). However, sometimes there are no options. We must come to terms with it.”
